Great do it all GPS
Reviewed By Geoffrey, 04 Dec 2012

Very good deal at £350 including OS 1:50k maps. Magellan case good and allows the unit to continue tracking in suspend mode which is a must given this units appetite for batteries. Will be trying the higher capacity rechargeable Hahnel AA 2800mah batteries to see if they push endurance beyond circa 8hrs. Positives are the maps are easy to load and clear, GPX trails are easily downloaded and the menu structure for me is easily followed, the resistive touch screen requires a proper fit for purpose protective film and is pretty responsive even with light gloves on which is a bonus in winter. Have not required use of Magellan customer services so cannot rate them. The unit is very rugged and is weighty which I like as you get a feel of good robust build quality.

Using the Explorist 710
Reviewed By Stephen, 06 Oct 2011

Taken a while to understand and be able to use this device, not helped by the Help Centre failing to return to me regarding a system crash (since rectified by a system change). Has one feature that I did not know existed and not covered in the online 'handbook', which seems a 'fish-eye' magnifier for points on the screen. However, now that I have a better understanding of the basics of the unit I can report it is well made and offers good resolution. The touch screen works well and appears to be durable.
Battery life could be improved and a rechargeable Magellan battery unit would be beneficial to extend range. Not sure how many batteries one would need for a week of walking! Tested for accuracy this week in the North York Moors National Park where the unit worked very well albeit the 1:25,000 'add on' OS map helped considerably for fine detail.
Overall a well made unit, which appears to work as a Sat-Nav but is better in my view for cross-country hiking.
Improvements would be easier access to information regarding the functionality and tips to improve use. The improved battery would also be helpful asap.
