Compared to similar-spec winter models, at less than £100 these Couloir Gloves represent excellent value for money! I used them as my 'warm' gloves while ski-touring last winter and found that they performed equally well in wet or dry cold weather conditions.
In use, the elastic wrist straps are particularly useful and save you worrying about dropping the gloves, or having them blow away when you need to take them off. There's no need for liner gloves as the pile lining creates a lovely warm cushion of air around the hands, and also serves to wick sweat away, leaving your hands at a comfortable temperature inside. The inner appears to be well attached and doesn't move around or invert when you're taking them off. Despite more modern insulating fabrics being available, fibre pile still reins supreme for warm-when-wet use in mixed conditions, and works especially well in gloves where snow can be pushed inside by accident.
For a full-weight winter glove they are remarkably light and dextrous; much more so than similar-spec ski gloves. If you're using them to ski in resort those wrist elastics are invaluable when you're reaching for the phone or taking photographs.
The wide fabric cuff makes them easy to get on and off; allows over- or under-jacket use, and can be cinched up tight with the toggles. The gloves are gently elasticated over the back of the wrist to provide a closer fit, but don't feel as tight or constrictive as other winter models I've used.
Finally, they're lighter and less bulky in the rucksack than most winter gloves, which is an issue if you tend to wear a lighter pair of 'working' gloves most of the time.
Like most Mountain Equipment products, these have been well conceived and well constructed. Mine certainly feel like they're built to last and will give a good few more years' service. Look after the leather on them and they'll look after you!
Highly recommended :)
