Winter mountaineering demands a tool that can handle the shift between staying safe on snow slopes to actually climbing steeper ground when required.

The Cirque is a lightweight, yet extremely strong axe designed specifically for these scenarios. The shaft has enough of a curve to give clearance for your knuckles and ease of placement around bulges, but is not so radical that it can't be easily plunged into snow.

It has a gently curved pick; just drooped enough to give security when the gully line steepens or you have to overcome a cornice exit, but also gentle enough that the thing doesn’t get torn from your hands when you have to do an ice axe brake.

Our first ice axe
Reviewed By Paul, 06 Mar 2015

This is our first ice axe. Bought one for myself and my wife. Got great advice to the staff at Betws-y-coed store. Feels good to hold and light weight to carry. Good warm feel handle for the cold weather use. Staff gave some good tips on picking the right length, stowing on the pack and how to use as a break. Just need some wither weather to try it out.

Great all round mountain axe
Reviewed By Glynn, 06 Jan 2014

Great axe which builds on the previous models, light and easy to handle. With an added bonus of a really grippy handle.

Excellent quality from DMM, I can take or leave the leash that came with it, I guess it's your personal preference.

Great axe for Winter Outtings
Reviewed By Hywel, 06 Jan 2014

I bought the axe earlier in the year for some fun in Scotland and it didn't disappoint.

The pick is T-rated and the whole thing feels solid and reliable. The curve of the shaft gives a comfortable angle to hold the axe at whilst walking and seems perfect should you need to bury it into the snow (which a good friend did when he slipped).

Would certainly recommend.

A step in the right direction.

I would definitely recommend this for UK winter mountaineering, particularly if you are moving into the Scottish winter territory.

The nice curve of the axe gives you that added sense of security on steeper ground, and the gel hand grip at the base of the axe grips well with leather gloves.

The axe is t-rated and the pick is self is sleek enough to plunge straight into the snow. Allowing a successful/easy build of a snow cave or bucket belay seat.

Overall; a must have in the cairngorms and a valued piece of kit!
