Basic but does the job
Reviewed By Alan, 18 Mar 2014

I've been using my device for about a year and found it easy to use and gives a good battery life on rechargeable batteries. It is chunky and sturdy and has stood up to cold, rain and snow and got me off the hill in the dark more than once. The one slight annoyance I have found is that if you keep the unit on while you are walking, the little joystick button is constantly being accidentally knocked or pressed (in a pocket or, more recently, in a case) and so you find it has clicked onto function you didn't want or you've marked a dozen or so Waymarks since the last time you checked it! The free Garmin BaseCamp software is simple but useful for downloading your latest tracks once you get home - or for pre-loading grid references afore ye go.

Etrex 10 no frills gps unit.
Reviewed By Hal, 06 May 2013

This is a get out of jail free card. If you are stuck out on Rannoch Moor and the mist suddenly comes down then this basic gps unit will quickly give you an accurate grid reference so that you can find your position on a paper OS map and then work out your bearings for your route off. It does have limited memory and no digital OS mapping but it is very reassuring to know where you are standing. Navigation is all about using a map and a compass so people shouldn't get too reliant on a gps unit, they can fail. The quick start guide is useless for novices but once you get your head round using the joystick to highlight and click on its features then it becomes a lot more apparent how to use it. You can download geocache gpx files and use them with an accuracy of up to 3 metres. The satellite signal strength is much improved from the original basic garmin unit.

Great entry level GPS but frustrating at first
Reviewed By nick, 09 Jan 2012

This is a robust, well designed unit and is reasonably priced, and very quick to get a location fix. However it is an entry level unit and as such would really benefit from better information to get people started (given that they are likely to be new to this). Also if you want maps on your hand held GPS look elswhere. The world base map which it advertises as included (for the uninitiated)is effectively the co-ordinates of large (ish) towns and cities (virtually no graphics). What this GPS offers is the ability to find geocaches on a well known website, download them onto the unit, and then go and get the cache and it does that very well indeed. I would have given it 5 stars if the info and initial guidance / manual had been more helpful. Now i am used to it (2 weeks) i love it, but i have had to work at it. Also the up side of no maps is no large bills for buying the maps!!

Very Disappointing

Bought as Xmas present for me. It is only GPS position tool no maps on it or available to download. Think this detail not explained well enough on product or by store staff.
