A handy unit

Bought this back in August for it's purpose, geocaching. It's done well and has currently lead me to the best part of 100 caches with a good degree of accuracy. It appears to be robust and has coped with some foul weather! It has also withstood a number of cycle rides on some pretty rough surfaces. The hardest thing to use is the logging of details using the centre joystick as the unit is not touch screen. However, abbreviations have come in very useful. Uploading from Geocaching.com is straight forward. Altogether a handy piece of kit, I like it, 4 1/2 stars.

Brilliant easy to use Perfect for Geocaching too !

Brilliant handset, seems so fast compared to my other GPS handset, the Explorist 610 is easy to use with its touch screen and dashboard, also easy to carry, feels steady in the hand , does exactly what it says it will.. I enjoy Geocaching and the info for this uploads in seconds , the staff at Cotswold Brecon, are very pleasant and helpful, it was a pleasure to shop with them , found out also exclusive to Cotswold stores the O/S Maps 1:50 are included in the price for this item, a very happy bunny indeed as it has a 3-axle elec compass no more wandering and instant pics of my caches if desired

excellent bit of kit

Well i went and spent out on a treat for myself and got the new Magellan Explorist 610.
Watford yet again excellent customer service the young guy in there was so helpfull it was wonderfull he spent the time and had patience to explain a lot of points of the different units before i settled on the one i got.
Screen very nice easy size to use accurate and my god the difference in sattellite pick up compared to my old Etrex unit i can still get sat recognition in my living room with this unit and comes up good signal indoors as well so very impressed aalthough i did not need it to get around the house i ight add !!!
Tried it out on a hike this week adn very sturdy kit waterproof so rain wont kill my spent out purchase sat orientation maps very good and touch screen when you get use to it is wonderfull.it feels like it lags until you get use to the speed it moves at with the touch and adjust according i have the hang of tjis and am deeply satifsfied again with my purchase.
I rate this kit very highly even though its early days i live all the maps screen etc all great improvement on my last purchase high price tag but will drop i reckon but worth it you get what you pay for and i am happy so thats the answer right there !!!
Agian excellent kit but the Watford staff also deserve recognition greta time and energy spent in giving me great customer service i am impressed guys thanks.

Using the Explorist 710

Taken a while to understand and be able to use this device, not helped by the Help Centre failing to return to me regarding a system crash (since rectified by a system change). Has one feature that I did not know existed and not covered in the online 'handbook', which seems a 'fish-eye' magnifier for points on the screen. However, now that I have a better understanding of the basics of the unit I can report it is well made and offers good resolution. The touch screen works well and appears to be durable.
Battery life could be improved and a rechargeable Magellan battery unit would be beneficial to extend range. Not sure how many batteries one would need for a week of walking! Tested for accuracy this week in the North York Moors National Park where the unit worked very well albeit the 1:25,000 'add on' OS map helped considerably for fine detail.
Overall a well made unit, which appears to work as a Sat-Nav but is better in my view for cross-country hiking.
Improvements would be easier access to information regarding the functionality and tips to improve use. The improved battery would also be helpful asap.
