Great

Now this is not a cheap compass. However it does work really well, good size base plate, illuminated direction, bezel and reference points. Good roamer at varying scales. Sighting system real good for that pinpoint accuracy. Not a classic needle rather a floating disc, which helps with sensitivity and stops that needle flutter. Overall a great compass as a piece of kit, just not sure where the extra £50 over Type 4 comes from.

Not the cheapest but excellent value for money

Just getting back into mountaineering following a long lay off due to serious injury. In the meantime my trusty expedition 4 had gone astray.

Despite owning a collection of compasses, I bought a replacement of this one.

While all their needles point reliably north, this is my best one.

Distances are easier to measure courtesy of the romer scale for all map scales (including the increasingly popular 1 : 40,000 used by Harveys). It also has luminous markings, making it ideal for night navigation - you can see instantly when the 'red is in the shed'.

Its not the cheapest option but what's a few quid for an easier life?

Great 'no fuss' Compass

The long side edge is useful for taking bearings off the map. Nice compass this. It's got little rubber feet which is a nice feature.

Fantastic Compass!

I recently used this compass on my Duke of Edinburgh Expedition as our sole means of navigation. Who needs a GPS when this hardwearing compass has everything you need? This is great of people who use different maps because the roamers are applicable to different scales of map. The compass is fairly big, so you can't lose it and very easy to use from the beginner to the advanced map reader. Indispensible!

Quality compass - reliable

Well you can either buy a cheap one that'll leak alcohol all over your bag after a little while, or invest and have a quality tool for life - a worthwhile investment all round!

Slick, simple, accurate.

Simple, slick, and accurate. That's the Silva Ranger Compass in a nutshell.

After reading bad reviews online about compasses cheaper than £10, and being billed as the 'best selling compass in the UK' I couldn't really go wrong for £20 could I? Having ventured down to my local Cotswolds to purchase one today, I was also surprised to receive 10% off for the grand price of my email address and post code if I joined the 'Explore More' loyalty card scheme. Ah, why not?

The compass itself looks the part, slick simple design, thick sturdy plastic baseplate, a built in magnifier as well as an aesthetically pleasing Silva lanyard. The luminous stripes on the needle, baseplate and degree scale are also ideal for those using it at night.

It has centimetre and inch graduations along the edges, as well as 2 romers for accurate grid reference taking at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 (sadly not the additional 1:63,000 scale though).

An essential accessory to any outdoorsman/womans gear.

Best compass i've ever had!

Being visually impaired i've struggled to find a compass that works for me in the day and night, but this one has met all of my expectations. Clear and easy to use you will not regret buying this compass. Good for beginners and works well for those who are more serious about navigation. Has been taken to extremes of temperatures and still worked with great accuracy. Very smooth movement. Essential piece of equipment!

Comfortable adjustable headtorch

Used this for night orienteering. Bright light with good peripheral coverage allows confident running both downhill and on tight trails. On high setting the light actually dazzles when reading your map and it does take a moment to readjust back to the trail. The carrybag does stretch a little on first use and is a bit baggy on the headband but it's not a big problem.
