My First Rucksack !!

So, here I am just started climbing outdoors and need a rucksack after trying to walk across boulders for 20 mins to reach my first ever climb. There I was with 2 small rucksacks on my back and guess what..NO GOOD..so I went to the Reading store for a big one, was measured and helped by a very helpfull member of staff. This product is great for the money, has all I need including a rain cover which i may need in our climate! Lots of pockets and most of all very comfortable. To top it all I got an ExploreMore Card bonus of 20% off!! Would recommend this to anyone...

benchmark in simplicity

This pack is free of all the bells and whistles which serve only to complicate and crowd the pack, Berghaus have really embraced clutter free functionality and made a great pack. the back is comfortably padded without being too bulky and the wider shoulder straps distribute the weight very well so the straps don't cut into you. The hip belt is comfortable and sturdy and the buckle is strong and easy to use. The racking loops on the hip belt seem to soak in water and tend to abrade quickly, they could have done with a plastic tube coating. The front attachment points are of little use for almost anything actually as gear has smashed and stabbed the back of my legs before. The side compression straps sometimes looses themselves off but overall are effective and provide a great and secure placement for storing axes. The lid pocket is a bit small also so i have found it hard to get even small items in with a guide book in there.

very good rucksack

used walking / climbing in northern Wales, thouroghly dependable bag. Extremely comfortable with a comfortable back which still fits me although I am quite small (around 5' 5'' then). The rucksack is highly adaptable and also alows great flexibility and freedom of movement. Obviously very well built and long lasting, definately good value.

Brilliant!

A truely versatile bag! So far it has taken me climbing in Costa Blanca, Mountineering in Scotland and even the weekly trip to the local climbing centre.
Lots of room on the outside to attach skis, climbing gear, 2 ice axes and walking poles if needed. Again lots of space inside for gear, clothing, food etc. and also internal pocket for water bladder.
So whether you're an experienced climber or a novice hill walker, this is a good all rounder!

excellent all round mountaineering pack

An array of attachment points over the pack, including ice axe loops and gear loops on the waist strap for your rack when climbing, make this an excellent all round mountaineering pack. It fits the back well and comfortably, whilst being narrow enough for tight movements on climbs and scrambles. I've used this for via ferrata in the Dolomites, winter mountaineering in Scotland, scrambling in Snowdonia and the Lakes, and just general walking in the hills. It is big enough for a one night expedition and a good pack for a group leader on a day trip, but for longer trips a bigger pack will be required. Great buy at an excellent price; much cheaper than very similar packs by other brands.

Tough and comfortable.

This isn't the most technical rucksack or the lightest, but it's incredibly comfortable with huge loads and has survived years of abuse.

Hard as Nails

The Vulcan is big, heavy, and hard as nails. You can throw as much weight as you can carry into its tardis-like main compartment, but you will break long before it does! There is not much in the way of fancy extras here, straps and buckles are basic but rugged, but they do the job, its easy enough to strap things to the outside using the built in anchor-points. The two 10 litre side pouches are detachable and can be strapped together to make a passable daysack, a useful feature although I would always use a purpose-built daysack if possible. The heavy padding on the back and waist straps do help when carrying heavy loads, but add to the overall weight of the backpack which is considerable.
Overall I think this is a great piece of kit when used appropriately, on long multi-day expeditions when a lot of kit is needed. It is also good for gap-year type travel as the straps wont break when its being slung up onto the roofs of Peruvian buses etc! If you want to carry a picnic and a spare towel to the beach however, don’t get the Vulcan! It’s a beast, and needs to live in the wild!

Being adjustable from 40 to 60 lt means for an overnight visit your few belongings don't slide around all over the place whilst expanding it to 60 lt provides enough storage for a few more nights. Overall the bag is extremely well constructed and if it lasts as long as our Berghaus rucksacks will be worth every penny.

Great Rucksack

I Bought one of these rucksacks for my dofe hike. It was perfect. The Bio fit back system is really comfortable and easy to adjust. All you nhave to do is pull a strap located behind one of the hip pads.

On my hike we shared the tent and it was easy when it came to my tuurn to carry it. Th best place to put it is the compression straps on the front of the bag. This is also a good place to put your carry mat. There is plenty of space inside to fit spare clothes, food and cooking equipment. The rain cover is easy to fit and can fit over the tent or carry mat on the compression straps.
There was only 1 minor problem i had with this bag. I couldn't fit my sleeping bag in the bottom compartment without taking it out of the sleeping bag's bag. If that makes sense. This was due to my sleeping bag's width.
However this bag has loads of space and pockets. It is comfortable and also very durable. If you need a large backpack this is perfect for you.
