A Great Winter Aid

If you are looking for a non technical axe with great build quality and at a decent price then look no further than the Munro.

I used mine earlier this year for a very snowy winter ascent on Bowfell and I don't think I could of done it without this!

Fantastic All round Axe

I brought a DMM cirque a couple of years back and have used it for the past 2 winter seasons. I must admit its a very good axe for all round winter mountaineering from Winter walking to Climbing Grade I/II climbs. I have belayed off its T rated shaft for Grade I/II gullys and climbs, have self arrested myself numerous times and from different positions, the slightly curved shaft helps to dig into Verglas and very soft snow, its also very good at keeping your fingers away from the snow/ice thus keeping your hands that little bit warmer and dryer. Even cutting slash steps either up or down as its well balanced and follows through nicely when cutting. I have even used it for torquing in cracks in helping me to get up some climbs (Left branch Y Gully in Cairngorm) and the pick is still going strong. I would say if they brought out a Hammer version then you would have 2 very good all round ice axes that could easily do Grade III (possibly IV), however if I do end up in braking the pick then I will have to buy a whole new axe as you cannot replace the picks. I have also added a sling through the eye (instead of the leash, as I prefer leash-less) with a Krab so I have a sling to hand if ever the need arises and it doesn't interfere with how you hold it either. All in all a very good all round axe.

strong, light, functional and customisable

This is a very very versatile tool, The Laser pick is ideally suited for ice climbing and can be changed for mixed climbing with ease. At the bottom of the tool there is a hook that you can rest a hand on instead of a leash, which allows for less pump and a bit up from this there is another smaller hook which is basically another hand rest which makes grabbing the tool with both hands without cluttering the handle very easy - great little feature. The tool can be fitted with a leash too. At the back of the shaft there is a removable hex screw which can be swapped for an attachment point for a leash which again allows for you to rest your hand and obviously prevents you dropping it ! The adroid Leash for the Viper is fully removable with a simple clip mechanism so the transition between removing and re engaging the leash is seemless, very easy and hassle free indeed. The weight of the tool balances really well as well so it just feels nice to use, definately a product for extreme situations, perfectly crafted and incredibly well designed. I'd never use another tool now having climbed with this one
