Columbia products protect you from the elements, snow, rain or sun. They allow you to go longer, farther, easier and stay comfortable while doing whatever outdoor activity you choose. Instead of focusing on the characteristics of the products, Columbia shows the benefits and help the consumer enjoy their time outdoors.
One important technology for the summer season is Columbia’s OMNI-shade which features:
- Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) ratings to maximize fun by minimizing the harmful effects of the sun.
- Columbia’s Omni-Shade is the first apparel fabric in the United States to be awarded the Seal of Recommendation by The Skin Cancer Foundation. The seal is awarded to UV protection products with a minimum of UPF 30 that meet their specific criteria.
Omni-Shade clothing is produced from a fabric rated for its level of UV protection. A tight weave structure and fabric types such as textured synthetics and natural fibers, and even color selection, produces sun protective properties. Columbia’s UPF fabrics are tested using an industry standard test method: AATCC 183. A machine called a spectrophotometer is used to pass ultraviolet light through the fabric sample. The spectrophotometer measures how much UV light passes through the fabric, and calculates the percentage of UV blocked to determine the UPF rating. Example: UPF 40= 1/40th of the UV rays hitting the fabric penetrates through, or more than 97 percent blockage.
