Rock solid and like the tardis

I am 6ft 2in my buddie is 6ft 6in we both own this tent. The first thing you notice when you first pick it up is the weight you don’t even notice as it is so light. Very easy to put up quickly on “auto pilot” and once up you have a safe haven from the elements. I have always been a bivi bag person I also like being out in all weathers this tent was a massive surprise to me. If you are a solo packer their really are few (if any) better choices. It lasts too! Nothing I hate more than a piece of kit that promises much but fails quickly. This tent lasts I have owned mine for over 5 years now and it shows little signs of age . I use mine for all sorts great for light weight packing (have to light weight now due to ageing knees lol). Also have a top box on the motorbike and this tent fits in easy with sleeping bag cooker and food for a few days. Been out in some big storms with it too and I slept like a baby. The room in them is worth mentioning too of course its a 1 man tent but wow more than enough room for yourself your kit without a strain yes I agree the price tag is high but as ferris bueller said “if you have the means I highly recommend it”.

Still the Best!

Like many products which have been on the market for a while it would be easy to dismiss the Akto as out of date, however in this case it would be a bad error. I use it in the North and West of Scotland on backpacking / hill bagging expeditions often camping in less than ideal pitches in ever changing weather. I'm also 6ft4ins tall which puts space at a premium especially in wet weather. Nevertheless, in my view the Akto is simply the best available compromise between weight, space, weather resistance and durability. I would reccommend it to anyone.

Quite the life saver!!!

I've been using this tent for the past year now. My girlfriend and I were out backpacking last weekend and we encountered this freak storm. We woke up to a torrential downpour and really high winds that lasted from the early morning to mid-afternoon. As the rain began to let up it changed over to hail. This tent performed amazingly against the golf-ball sized hail. With the high wind the tent wasn't shaking as violently as my old tent did which made the nights sleep possible. I am soo glad I purchased this tent. If anything ever happened to this tent I would not hesitate to purchase a new one, it's just that amazing. There was plenty of room in the vestibule for our two 65L packs, poles and boots, and plenty of room to enter and exit the tent with the gear in the vestibule. The tent is very comfortable for two people. However, as you can expect there isn't much room for gear inside the tent once you have two 6ft long down-mummy bags and sleeping pads in there. We had quite a bit of condensation on the walls of the tent. But, that was kind of expected since we encountered high hummidity and it was wet all day. This tent is soo much better than my last tent in that my old tent if it was raining out, as soon as you opened the fly water would fall inside the tent. This has not happened yet for this tent and I don't expect it will. Overall it's an amazing tent, one that you should definitly consider purchasing if you spend as much time in a tent as I do!

Good Weekend Family Tent

Bought this tent last week for £85 which was a fantastic bargain, and used it last night for the first time. It was relatively easy to pitch, and very spacious inside. As is the norm with camping in the UK it rained all night and the tent kept everybody dry. The only problem I found was going in and out of the tent the water does come in, but having had other tents this is pretty standard! Would recommend this tent for the price....

Great product at a great price (£99, July 2011)

My girlfriend and I bought this tent as our first tent with a living area (for those rainy English summer days...). It is perfect size for just the two of us but also with enough space to comfortably fit another couple in, should we want to go with friends. As for its longevity, we have only used it a couple of times. I have been a fan of Vango previously, so I feel confident. It appears to be hardwearing (not withstanding crap pegs but which tents at this price have any better?) but only time will tell. At the moment, I would recommend this tent.

Reliable family tent for weekends away

We've had this tent for three years now and its been really reliable, it was bigger than what we expected. Its withstood the rain and the kids love it, easy to put up and ideal with the two sleeping areas. We would recommend this tent.

Multiple rips after only 3 camps

We bought 2 of these tents for our Scout group. Have had Vangos in the past which usually provide 3+ years of use (and abuse) by the youngsters. This one was a real let down. It's dead easy to put up but we ended up having to take both back due to the inner, the fly and the ground sheet all developing rips and holes after only 3 outings. Have Vango compromised quality to get such a cheap price? If you've got kids going in it, I'd spend a bit more to get a tougher tent. Have to say Cotswold were great, replacing them for a (hopefully) more robust Robens without question.

Well priced tent at the sale price.

Not sure if I would pay the full price for this tent. Erect in ten minutes is a little optimistic. You would never do it on your own, more like twenty and two would struggle the first couple of times in ten. It's a big tent with plenty of accommodation, perfect for three but a bit tight for four. As for splitting for backpacking, forget it, far too heavy.

Top Tent

Against the myriad of available backpacking tents I rate this one very highly. It was used in the Lakes recently and was pitched and taken down numerous times in driving rain and 50-60 mph gusts and it worked a treat. The adjustable peg loops and pole locators make it very easy to pitch in a hurry and still achieve a taut fly. The fact that it pitches outer first is ideal for the UK and the inner stayed dry despite the weathers best efforts to soak us, unlike our friend’s tent. Once up it’s very stable and while it looks small I’ve been able to squeeze 3 people in sitting when eating. Most reviews say there’s just enough room in the vestibule to keep two backpacks, my partner and I (5ft6 and 5ft9) were able to sleep quite comfortably with both our backpacks (50lt and 65lt) at the head of the tent, leaving the vestibule free for cocking. The only negative aspects I’ve seen so far is that it weighs slightly more then some other similar tents and the fly sites a little high are the rear. However, I think the extra weight is worth the additional strength, warmth and ease of pitching this tent offers. As for the high riding fly at the rear, I always pitch the rear into the wind and even sideways rain didn’t cause an issue.

Not the lightest 2 man tent but strong. Lots of guy lines to tie down. Tent was pitched first time in 5 minutes. Really like the outer pitch first idea. Looks and feels like its built to last.

Third time lucky...

I purchased this tent to take my wife and 2 year old son camping. The first tent I was given had faults, so did the replacement. Cotswold's exchanged them both with little hassle. The 3rd one was tested at the last opportunity and was A OK. I would say this is a 4 man tent, max. Pulling back the sleeping pod divide really doesn't add that much space, it would just be really snug. There's good ventilation with the vents above the front door, side window, rear vent and additional door. The tent looks like it has plenty of room when you put it up, but once you've got all your gear, food and luggage in there really isn't much space left for living. Definitely get the fitted tent carpet, it's good if you and your kids are stuck inside because of bad weather. I'd recommend this tent and have done to a colleague, but if you're serious about space then go for the Icarus 500 XL. I'm looking into a forward extension for some extra space, in hindsight I'd have paid the extra as it's a cheaper option to the extension and less hassle. Don't forget to check dimensions and weight when picking your tent...

Superb tent

It's really easy to erect and well made . It's marketed as a 5 man tent but i think someone would have to sleep in living area to achieve this . i find it great for 2 of us plus dog for long weekend stays . you see plenty of icarus 500's on campsites which proves it's popularity.
