How bright does your light need to be? Let your torch decide!


The Nao, as well as being an incredibly high performance headtorch with an ingeniously adjustable strap design, has a few very clever tricks up its sleeve: it can tell how bright it needs to be, and you can tell it how it should decide. In Constant Mode, it's essentially a 'normal' torch: you can alter light intensity, but it stays at the brightness you've selected regardless of what you're looking at. In Reactive Mode, a built in sensor picks up how much light is reflecting off what you're looking at and adjusts the brightness accordingly, so everything is as brightly lit as it needs to be.


Using software downloaded from Petzl, you can set how reactive it is, how bright or dim it needs to be and how wide or narrow the beam is. This way the battery life is optimised, as the torch is never brighter than you require it to be. Your favourite settings can then be stored in the unit and selected depending on what you're doing, so you can have a mode for climbing, a mode for walking, a mode for running, even a mode for looking for things in the attic!

This head torch is incredible, its intuitive reaction to the light and dark is very reassuring. I am an ultra-runner so a lot of my training runs and races are in the dark and I mean dark. It’s so lightweight I have to keep checking that it’s still on my head, the straps are so comfortable and easy to adjust. Today I have the nao battery pack charging via my laptop ready for tonight’s club run this will be on the road, the nao will not only identify all the potholes but it also slows and helps warn oncoming traffic.


Verdict: Brilliant and reliable, it did me proud during my 100 mile ultra!

Bought this headtorch for my other half for Christmas and he's just come back from his first night time run full of compliments and superlatives on the torchs' performance. Running along a disused railway path in Keswick, the torch lit up all the surroundings even showing deer sitting in the woods!

I know it seems like an awful lot of money for a headtorch, but this really is in a league of its own. I already had a couple of Petzl torches and, as I noted in another online review, after using this you will be utterly disappointed when you return to your original torch.

I use it primarily for serious night-time walking with our German pointer, who has the ability to disappear into the darkness with ruthless efficiency. The 'reactive' setting is amazing in bring able to go from quite stunning wide-angle lighting to long-distance spotlight in milliseconds by just inclining the head upwards! Which, of course, enables me to check on the hound's progress on the other side of a field..

It's bright enough to stun oncoming drivers to slow down and take care passing on narrow roads too, although the reactive setting isn't suitable for cycling as oncoming headlights will cause the torch to lessen its output immediately.

The light output is quite stunning, even in low-level mode and provides immediate coverage of wherever you might be walking, giving much more confidence than I had with my other Petzls. The battery seems to be lasting well, having already been out for a few hours on the initial charge.

If you are dithering because of the price, don't; you won't regret it.

First off, yes, this is an insane amount of money for a torch but you don't half get what you pay for!

I regularly hit a forest trail near my house late at night and was using a AA Maglight. This thing is the sun vs a candle in comparison.

The reactive light function is great and adjusts light very quickly and quite suitably, if, in your opinion, it hasn't adjusted light to a sensible level you can download a programme from petzl.com/os that will let you create profiles and adjust the brightness in different situations.

Top notch product, if you do hike/climb/cycle or even trail run at night check one out, you won't be disappointed regardless of what torch you have at the minute!

Bought this headtorch for my son's birthday.
Delighted with his gift which is perfect for fishing day and night with his new license. Also bought Cotswold fleece, black with front short zipper which was a great fit, good quality and ideal for outdoor wear (fishing,cycling and hiking). Bought these in your excellent sale for half price and will certainly be visiting your shop again.
