Meindl's perrenially popular boot for trekking up to the snowline.

Meindl have been making boots in Bavaria for over 300 years, and although the Burma Pro GTX hasn't been in their range for quite that long, their expert leatherworking heritage is brought to bear in the construction of this exceptional boot. All the benefits of a top quality leather upper - durability, foot-contouring comfort and weatherproofing - team up with the added reassurance of a 100% waterproof Gore-Tex lining and a rubber rand for added protection against scuffs.

The leather "wings" of Meindl's DIGAfix lacing system wrap around the top of the boot to hold the foot securely, especially around the heel area. This combines with the Memory Foam System(MFS), which sits between the leather and the lining, adjusting its form to the shape of your heel for an exceptional fit.

The stunning attention to detail extends into the sole: made exclusively for them by Vibram, Meindl designed the Multigriff sole for excellent traction on a variety of surfaces, even specifying the angle at which the lugs project from the unit.

Clown boots
Reviewed By S, 26 Feb 2014

I bought these boots in Dec 2007. They were heavy compared to other boots, but comfortable, and totally waterproof.

However, in the last few months, the outer layers of the soles of both boots have started to come apart. I was very surprised to see this, because although they are over 6 years old, they have not had a great deal of heavy duty use. Mostly used in short 3 mile rambles on moors, or grassy meadows: only one mountain. And no more than about 700 miles covered from new. And I have maintained the boots according to Meindl's instructions, and with their branded cleaning products.

I enclose photos of the soles, so you can see for yourself what I mean.

I also have never had a pair of other brands of walking boots that came apart in this way. With other brands, the soles just get worn down, or the leather cracks and starts to let in water. With my Meindls, the leather uppers are in perfect condition, and still totally waterproof.

The ankle cuffs have worn badly, which also surprised and disappointed me. Again I have never had any brand of boot where the cuffs have worn out. But with other brands the cuffs tend to be made of leather, whereas the Meindl cuffs seem to be of an artificial material, which is clearly less hard-wearing.

Anyway, my strong feeling and experience is that the soles coming apart is not a consequence of normal wear and tear. I feel that it is a manufacturing defect, either in the design of the soles, (the outer sole layer is ridiculously thin), or in the adhesive used to stick the soles together.

I contacted Meindl, but they want to charge me £72 just to resole them and replace the ankle cuffs. I would have expected them to waive repair costs altogether, or at least offer a concession. Clearly customer service is not so great in Germany.

I will never buy this brand again, and will not be recommending them to any fellow Ramblers.

These are my first pair of real walking boots that I have purchased and I couldn't be happier. I took on boggy terrain, as well as rocky and stoney ground and the boots were fantastic.

Excellent year round boots
Reviewed By David, 15 Jan 2014

I do most of my walking in the Cheviot hills which are particularly wet and boggy. My Burma Pro's have held up extremely well after eight months and many long wet walks (some sunny ones too). Maybe it's because I always clean the and proof them with Nikwax after every walk but they still look as good as new.

As with most boots, I'd recommend partnering them with decenct gaiters to stop water, snow and stones etc. getting inside but other than that they are remarkably tough and very comfortable.

They're a cracking pair of boots and if you look after them they'll last for years!

Great fit for an odd shape

I recently replaced my worn out Salomon boots. Being rather short footed - size 7, and the width of an 8.5, these were the only boots i could find that fit comfortably with no movement in the heel or toes. I have since been to the Lake District and more recently to Snowdon (on New Yrs eve). Despite the snow and rain, the boots were warm, dry, and very sturdy and supportive for transiting across the Pyg Track with quite a bit of snow and slush around. Great boot so far...Looking forward to more walks in them

I sent them back to meindl and they refused to replace them despite these boots being new. Do not buy these boots if you are planning on walking anywhere with rocks apparently that voids your warranty.

Superb boots
Reviewed By Paul, 01 Oct 2013

I bought these recently from the Bristol store to replace the lightweight Demon boots I have owned for many years, which have just about worn out. I was a bit apprehensive because these are much heavier than my old ones but, after a couple of short low level walks from home, I have just taken them for a few days hillwalking in the Lake District and can confirm that they are excellent. They are well built, very stable and supportive (ideal for rough paths and rocky terrain) and keep your feet dry in boggy conditions. I wore them all day long for two days, including a night navigation exercise, and my feet have remained warm, dry, comfortable and blister free. Thanks also to the excellent fitting service in Bristol, who measured my feet first and confirmed I needed a size bigger than I would have normally purchased. If these boots ever wear out I will definitely be looking for Meindl boots again!

Best footwear I've ever worn
Reviewed By Laurie, 24 Jun 2013

Bought these after about 2 hours of trying on various leather & fabric boots and having had my feet measured by helpful staff in Knightsbridge store. Turns out my feet are smaller than I'd thought!

I find the boots to be very comfortable, like wearing sturdy, waterproof slippers. Excellent waterproofing (briefly submerged in bog/water of Milford Haven on multiple occasions) and good support. I think they're excellent value, particularly as I got 15% for being a YHA member (which in itself is could well be the world's best value membership!)

Enjoy :)

Excellent boots
Reviewed By Alan, 30 May 2013

I have been wearing these boots for many years and have been very impressed with the way they fit my feet. I take a wider fitting and have a high instep and these boots are great.

The midsole on my last pair started to break up due to me not cleaning corrosive crop sprays off them well enough (lesson learned there) and I only had four weeks to go until a 100Km sponsored walk. I went into the Maidstone branch looking for flexible fabric boots as I felt that there wasn't time to break full leather ones in.

Alas, after nearly 2 hours of help from the shop staff, I couldn't find any that fitted my feet well enough. I then decided, as a last resort, to try the Burmas on. I'm glad I did because they were so comfortable! I realised that as my feet were used to the feel of them that it wouldn't take too long to wear them in. I added some Sorbothane Double Strike shock absorbing insoles as well because Burmas have quite a hard sole and I was getting painful heels from increasing the mileage and speed of my training walks.

In conclusion: Meindl Burma Pro GTX boots are extremely well made and very suitable for wide, high feet. They are, however, quite heavy and have a hard sole which may make them uncomfortable over long distances without added shock protection. If you do add insoles, you might consider going up half a size to accommodate the extra volume.

I will give these five stars as they are the only boot that fits me!

Why do I need any other boot?
Reviewed By J, 15 Apr 2013

I use these constantly, living in Wales and having the Blacks on my doorstep it is essential to have a dry boot. These work perfectly, even trudging through the more boggy areas for mile after mile I still have dry feet.

The first time I used them it was on the Black itself in 6 inches of snow, I did not slip once not even on the steep descent. 8 hours of walking in conditions that would test any kit I still had dry and warm feet. 500 walking miles later through rank bog, lacerating fern, and dusty track they are still performing with the original laces.

Keep the leather fed and the boots clean after every trip and these are life long boots. Well done Mendil

No better boot, no better boot company.
Reviewed By Daniel, 22 Mar 2013

The winning point of this boot must be the manufacturer- Meindl, a German boot company, really know how to look after customers and still hand make their boots. After having Meindls for a long while (nearing 15 years with daily use) a friend of mine saw the heal starting to split. He sent Meindl a letter and the boot after they requested it. What he received in the post shocked him- both the old boot, unfixed... but a completely new pair too. The company said that they had sent the old boot so that he can keep it for memories.

To the boot:

- Whether goretex or not, the leather is tough wearing and if looked after withstands even submergence.

- Look after the leather with correct cleaning products and conditioner and they'll last longer than any other boot: you'll get 10 years constant use easily.

- Get the boot fitted in store- the MFS needs to be fitted correctly and once snug, will mold to the foots shape giving you one of the most perfect fits around.

Word of advice, buy some good inner-soles. The standard ones in the boot are good, but give up when wet and last less than a year. Some good superfeet and you'll be set for life.

Superb Quality Boot
Reviewed By Andrew, 16 Jan 2013

I bought these boots a few months ago as I needed a tough, waterproof and most importantly a comfortable pair of boots that would be able to stand up to any challenge. 6 months on and I am very impressed with the purchase; I had never paid so much for any item of footwear but after repeated failures with cheaper brands I decided to go all out and after thorough research I was conifident in my selection. The boots are very comfortable and hardly needed breaking in, I have not one blister and 6 months of almost constant wear on all terrains from path to mountain and not a single drop of water has made it through, in saying this I would recommend the Nikwax treatment to keep them in good condition. All in all a superb buy that I cannot speak more highly of, I would recommend these boots to anyone.

To Everest Base Camp & Back - IN SAFETY & COMFORT
Reviewed By Mark, 03 Jan 2013

In Dec 2012, I reached Everest Base Camp in Meindl Burma Pro GTX boots. I bought them following expert advice and fitting at Cotswold Outdoor, Chester. The Vibram soles easily absorbed the shock of a total of 30,000 ft of ascent and descent. And the Burma's sole construction minimized lateral twisting, but provided this support without being "over-stiff." The cushioned ankle support was superb over uneven, moon-like terrain. An ample broadness to the boot resulted in extreme comfort during each of the 23 days of trekking.
The deep grain leather easily withstood the lacerating effect of constant trail dust, and on return, the boots have polished up like new.
Cotswold Outdoor fitting service could not have been better. Their sizing was "spot-on." They addressed my right foot bunion problem by expertly stretching the boot to create a pocket, and I used external/foam volume adjusters as well as thin liner socks in combination with medium density trekking socks (Bridgedale)to work in tandem with the high comfort level of the boots. All bought from Cotswold Outdoor, following such good advice from their boot-fitter. These boots felt like comfortable "gloves" from day one, and needed no breaking-in. My first training walk in them was up & down the Llanberis path to Snowdon's summit in great comfort, and they have also been excellent for hill-walking in the Clwydian Hills.
From Everest, I trekked West in my trusty Meindl Burma boots, across the Chola Pass and its glacier, to ascend Gokyo Ri. They took me to a height of 18,500 feet at Kalar Patthar overlooking Everest Base Camp (1500 ft below).
They carried me a total of 120 gruelling miles of round trip. But on return, there is only marginal wear to the heels, and otherwise they look like new. Quite simply, they are the best "hill" and "mountain" walking boot this 61 year old has ever bought, (in his 41 years of hill and mountain walking!) I can also say that as my single-most important bit of kit for this trek, I genuinely visited 13 Outdoor shops in the North West, in order to choose my boots - but I got my best advice from Cotswold Outdoor. And I could not have made a better decision. So, thank you. You helped get me there, and back! And in the process you helped me raise a lot of money for Oxfam.

TOP BOOTIES FOR BIG BLOKES (and small ones too!)
Reviewed By Stuart, 23 Nov 2012

I went to Cotswold because I have big feet (either a 13 or 14 in big boys sizes) and having spoken to their customer service line, I was directed to my nearest store which was Windsor. The staff were brilliant, the fitting service and attention to detail and to me was first class. I wore them around the office for a couple of days and then have been out with the dog and the first big trip was 2 of the 3 Yorkshire Dales peaks, Whernside and Ingleborough as a training expedition for a trip to Jordan in April 2013. The boots were brilliant and the only criticism (hence why 4/5 not 5/5) I can give them is my feet ached a bit at the end of the day so I have brought some pukka arch supportive insoles which should cure the problem. Other than that, they are excellent, go and buy some now! They are totally waterproof (I know, I stood almost 4" deep in a Y. Dales icy stream with out so much as a dribble) and are very well and solidly made. They are probably not the lightest boots around but when your are a 19 stone 6ft 6" rugby player, a couple of ounce's here and there doesn't make much of a difference!

I have had a pair of these for over 2 years now and have found them to be extremely comfortable hard wearing boots that have never leaked.
They were comfortable straight from the box and did not need to be broken in, the lacing system is excellent, as is the ankle support and MFS system. If I had to pick fault and its only a minor one I would say that the footbed is slightly hard for my liking and would benefit from softer cushioning but apart from that highly recommended.

Simply Fantastic
Reviewed By Calvin, 28 Jan 2012

Buying a pair of these was probably the best thing I have ever done with £180. They can go anywhere and do anything! I was a bit sceptical at first as to how good they would actually be as they felt quite heavy and stiff. However after about 10 hours worth of walking time they felt like slippers. They quickly soften up and flex better with your foot. The memory foam heel system also makes for a very custom fit which means they don't slip up and down your heel. The locking eyelet halfway up is a great feature as it means you can tighten the laces differently at the top to the bottom. They have taken a lot of punishment in the last year and are showing very minimal signs of wear, have never leaked and even stand up to my version of cleaning (a hosepipe followed by a bit of Nikwax if they are lucky). There are lighter boots out there but these boots are definitely worth the extra couple of hundred grams. You will never buy a different pair of boots again after you buy a pair of these!

Real value for money

It starts with the fit. The attention to detail I got from Steve in the Guildford store was excellent with care taken to ensure I knew my size and some good advice thrown in for free. I had been hesitating about buying Meindl boots, they are not the cheapest, but I was given confidence by the fitting service.

The Meindl Burma Pro has a semi rigid section in the middle of the tongue and this should not lie over or under the sides when laced up. Instead, choose a thicker or thinner sock to get this section to lie flush with the front of the boot for the best fit and comfort.

It’s important to ensure that your heel is pushed firmly back into the boot. The Digafix lacing system helps here, with hooks directly in line with the heel socket so that the laces really pull your foot into position, a bit like seatbelts for your feet.

Meindl advise re-tying the laces after five minutes or so when the memory foam has warmed up and shaped itself for a perfect fit. That works! After a quick adjustment, I could feel a cosy, hugging fit that prevented my heels from rising, even when going uphill. The feeling was warm and cosy so I did expect my normally sweaty feet to be super hot at the end of the walk.

As for the Air-Active footbed,
