best rainwear pants at any price Reviewed By Richard, 25 Jan 2012

These Gortex rainwear pants are the perfect answer to wet hikes: light, packable, slim-fitting, zippered, and definitely water-proof. I own several other pairs but they are woefully inadequate due to being a) not breathable so therefore clammy, hot, and uncomfortable or b) constructed out of a Gortex layer but with additional layers that make them too hot and baggy for any sort of energetic hike. These Berghaus ones feature an extra venting zip near the top of each leg, zips right up the leg for easy removal, even over muddy hiking boots, and buttons at the bottom to cinch in the cuffs. More than this though, they pack very neatly into their own mesh bag (supplied) to form a small, light-weight ball (think lawn-bowling ball size or less) that can be slipped easily into a back-pack and forgotten about until the next downpour. In any country with variable weather conditions all-season round (notably Highland Britain or any long-distance hiking areas), I wouldn't set off without these paclite pants in my bag (even for summer rainstorms they are light enough to avoid becoming too hot during strenuous use). The fit is perfect (I usually find that other brands are simply too long in the leg, so they drag on the ground and wear out). This is the one item everyone who loves being out all seasons should own--worth every penny!
