On a great many paths and tracks, you'll require footwear more substantial than a pair of trainers, but trekking boots might seem like overkill. The Respond Mid bridges this gap: more ankle support than trainers, lighter and more flexible than boots.

The carefully designed Contagrip sole is built around a stabilising nylon heel cup, with the midsole and the shape of the outsole promoting an ideal combination of flex and heel-to-toe rolling motion: enough stiffness for support but enough flex for comfort. The padded, mid-height ankle cuff protects against rocks and tree roots, while the waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex lining protects your foot from the rain.

Best all-round footwear Reviewed By Rosalind, 30 Apr 2013

After a couple of years of using my boyfriend's feet as stepping stones across streams, and on occasion giving in and letting him carry me, he informed me in not uncertain terms that he was getting me waterproof boots. I conceded - although I hate shoe shopping as I have awkward feet, and we headed off to Cotswold Outdoors in Reading.

After the best part of an hour with me tromping up and down steps and trying on pretty much everything they had in stock, I settled on these Meindl boots in a size 6. They are a fantastic, light weight pair of footwear, providing support and a sturdy sole for the uneven trails we tend to follow, without resorting to a full-on walking boot. Waterproof and beathable, when combined with my trusty Bridgedale socks they are perfect for both easy walking and the slightly harder terrains we tackle. With wide feet, these boots give the right amount of support, and have a good width for all the foot, avoiding blisters on heels as well. In addition to this, they have the height at the toe area and across the top of the foot to avoid your toes getting smushed on steeper inclines.

We have tested them rigorously (a walking holiday in Iceland, and various parts of the Lake District - both places not reknowned for their dryness!) and my feet have stayed warm, cosy and dry. A definite plus!

Overall, I would say these boots are one of the best bits of walking gear I possess, and are well worth their asking price.

Very comfy Reviewed By Natasha, 05 Mar 2013

Not the boot I intended to buy, but after having my feet measured I discovered I needed a wider fitting boot. James in Shrewsbury was really helpful and suggested these as they are a wider fit. So comfy.

Good stable comfortable walking shoe Reviewed By Rachel, 08 Jul 2012

Ok, so i have to admit i got the men's shoe because i am larger than a women's 8 ... but that being said ... i love this shoe. It is so comfortable, my ankle is supported well, & it feels lighter than other weighty boot i've worn. It has room in the toe area for comfort (rather than feeling cramped), but my ankle is strapped in well, & doesn't push on my ankle bone like others do due to the padding. I spent 1hr trying on boots & shoes, walking/manouvering up & down the ramps in store - i was really impressed with the service.

This is the 2nd boot i've bought from Cotswolds, & i have to say, i always come away feeling confident in my footwear - the footwear staff really know their stuff, & have lots of handy hints
