Poor - Low durability
Reviewed By Peter, 02 Oct 2014

I have had 3 pairs of the MOAB GTX shoe and 2 pairs of the boot version. ALL pairs have suffered sole detaching from upper within @9 months use. (Why did I repeat buy?). Typical use was day walking (up to 25 miles) mainly in S of England (in all weather conditions) and occasional BIG hill walking in north of England. Apart from the above fault, also found the textile upper does not wear well and lining breaks up fairly quickly.
Only 2 good points viz; they were comfortable and the sole tread was durable - which is no good if its detached from upper though!!.
I have completely stopped buying Merrells' as they simply are not good enough (other LDWA walkers reported the same). Found Scarpa 'approach shoes' far superior in all respects.

Bought in July 2013 returned in August 2014 as the sole on both shoes had become detached from the uppers. Reimbursed with the original purchase price of £90. However I was surprised to hear that these shoes were unsuitable for use in N Wales due to the ground conditions found in this area. The acidity of the soil, sheep droppings and other elements, this would effect the glue and stitching Apparently I should have bought leather boots. I found this reason unbelievable, it appeared to be an excuse for a poorly made shoe as I have a pair of HiTec shoes 4 years old and they are still going. Never again will I purchase a Merrell item.

Best shoes I've had in years
Reviewed By James, 10 Jun 2014

I usually just buy trainers to walk around in but decided to give these a go. I only really ever walk to work and around town.

They're so much more comfortable to walk in than anything I've had before I think I'm a convert.
I can't comment on the GTX lining as I've not been out in the wet yet.

Great shoe and fit.

Excellent service in the Skipton store. So far, well impressed with the Moab -very comfortable to wear and good stability on the move. Still in the 'breaking-in' process but the shoes already feel like old friends. Not that bothered about testing the waterproofness just yet .....

Good solid shoe

I was impressed with he assistance and advice offered in store. I had my feet measured and was amazed that my feet were recording a 13.5 (after years of wearing size 12's!) they had size 14's available & so far I've been satisfied with comfort and quality and hope they will allow me to enjoy many years & miles of walking to come!

Excellent shoe; excellent service
Reviewed By Richard, 17 Nov 2013

Having desired a pair of approach shoes for some time, I explained my requirements to Rich in the Ipswich branch.

My feet were measured and various options were considered, which we narrowed down to a choice between the Merrell Moab and a Scarpa model.

Trying both on a simulated 'approach' step I found the Moab to be the most comfortable pair. I have Diabetes ll, so to me -- with a risk of neuropathy -- confort combined with the ability to sustain impact and offset the risk of blisters is paramount.

All this Rich took into account and answered my questions with politeness bolstered with considerable knowledge.

Alton Water's eight-and-a-half mile circuit is hardly the foothills of Everest or even Tryfan, but with the appalling weather besetting Suffolk, two circuits provided a good test for them.

No blisters, great comfort and utterly waterproof. I cannot recommend them enough, nor the service provided in general by the staff in Tavern Street.

Downgraded from 5 stars

I originally reviewed these shoes around 6 weeks after buying them. At that time I was really impressed with them, but have become less so. They are definitely waterproof...I've worn them in some extreme conditions and had no problem, but the durablility has been suspect. After only a few (admittedly high mileage) months the lining has worn away and now torn in the toebox. Possibly a bad fit, but I would have expected the inner to be more durable. Also, I find the laces really frustrating. I've tried various knots, but they always come undone within a few hours. They were really comfortable, but like other reviewers I've found the durability to be in question.

Great from the word go...

I bought these on recommendation from a friend when looking for a shoe to provide a little more protection from the elements than the trail running shoe I usually wear. They took a little bit of time to break in, but I have found them really comfortable and they have been put through their paces in some torrential downpours. I can't fault them for comfort, grip or weatherproofing. Admittedly I have only been wearing them for a few weeks, so can't comment yet on durability, but impressed so far. Also, have to say the service in the Covent Garden branch was first rate.

Great fit for my old wide feet but......
Reviewed By Ian, 16 Aug 2013

I bought these in May 2012 at the Cotswold Water Park shop on our way to a walking holiday on the Isles of Scilly. I had had an operation on my foot 6 months earlier and was worried about fit. I was surprised to find that the shoes were perfectly comfortable on the mixed terrain the islands consist of and I could easily do 10 miles a day with no pain. They withstood the odd torrential downpour too. For the next 6 months they were perfect but then first one and then the other started to let our Mid Wales water in through the toe. The inner lining and Goretex had abraded where my big toes fit. The soles and uppers show very little wear but the shoes now have to be relegated to dry days. A tad disappointing but because of the fit, I am about to order another pair.

Really comfortable, straight out of the box.
Reviewed By Andrew, 28 Jun 2013

I bought a pair of these this week, then spent 8 hours walking around the Royal Norfolk Show the day after. They were really comfortable without being broken in, and my feet didn't get too hot despite thick socks and a warm day. Just the job.

Not upto the job!

Purchased these shoes as a birthday present. After 10 months the lining on the inside has ripped on both shoes. The outside and sole are still fine so it's a shame that they have not lasted. Would not buy another pair.

Comfortable, water proof shoes
Reviewed By Nicholas, 30 Jun 2012

A great show out of the box. I find the laces come undone easily if single knotted and I had to return mine for replacement as the inside material was ripping. But they are waterproof as indicated, comfortable and don't require wearing in. A great purchase at a good price.

Great for wider feet
Reviewed By Peter, 29 Jun 2012

Very impressed with Merrell, I have wide feet and these were a great fit straight out the box. As others have said, no breaking in was needed, and though one poor unfortunate has complained of leaking, i have been wearing mine across wet footpaths daily for a few weeks now without problems. I also have no complaints with the laces. These are my first pair of Merrell boots/shoes and suffice to say i will definately be buying more in the future.

A sensible pair of shoes
Reviewed By Caroline, 17 May 2012

I have just purchased these to replace a pair of Chameleon XCR shoes which gave excellent service over two years and must have covered somewhere near 4000 miles of dog-walking in all but the foulest of weather when boots were required. I never got wet feet even when wearing overtrousers.
The Moab shoes are the nearest in construction to the Chameleon but are all man/made fabric with no suede panels. They are very comfortable to wear and did not require breaking-in. A nice touch is the relective strip in the lacig loops. My only gripe so far is that the laces are quite short making a bow and knot a delicate exercise. I have no reservations in recommending Merrell shoes for comfort and durability.

Light and comfortable shoe
Reviewed By Paul, 27 Apr 2012

Intended to purchase the MOAB Ventilator as lightness and coolness were a priority. However I was also shown this shoe at the same time. It was more expensive but felt just as light and comfortable and I felt that having the Gortex option made the shoes more versatile.
I'm glad I did. Went to Dartmoor the next weekend and they performed excellently in very wet conditions. The fit is good and they were just as comfortable after 8 hours of walking in tough conditions. Would recommend.

A great shoe... so far!
Reviewed By Ian, 30 Jun 2011

This will be the 6th pair of Merrell footwear I have owned. All have been excellent; beyond compare. They are always comfortable straight from the box and mould beautifully to your feet as you wear them. They have been hard wearing yet retain their looks.
These new Moabs are no different, so far! But I read with interest the previous comment about waterproofing. I'm off to walk in the wet grass now...

great shoe that leaks!
Reviewed By , 03 May 2011

I purchased these shoes as a replacement to my old walking boots. They are so light you hardly know you have them on. Very breathable. Unfortunately when walking through my wet lawn they leaked. I returned them to Merrell, who were very prompt in supplying me a new pair, which promptly leaked again within days. I returned this pair and am still waiting to hear from them. Beware.
