A cutting edge, all-in-one mountain jacket combining insulation, protection and mobility in one streamlined package.

In more predictable conditions, various elements of the layering system can be combined, saving weight and bulk. In other words, if you're less likely to add or remove a layer, you can wear one garment that does everything: the Bastion Jacket from Mountain Equipment.

Although aimed squarely at alpinists - who can expect low temperatures, icy winds and snow - the Bastion provides warmth and weatherproofing for anyone who is active in the outdoors. Gore Windstopper Active Shell technology provides a reassuring barrier against the weather, while insulation comes from 80g Polarloft, striking the balance perfectly between weight and warmth.

From desperate mixed routes and steep powder descents, to Scottish scrambles and cold weather hikes, when you're moving through a harsh environment you need more than just weather protection: you need to know you can move without restriction or discomfort. The Bastion Jacket uses Windstopper Fast-X inserts to add stretch in key areas, combined with an active cut and articulated sleeves to allow unhindered movement, and Gore's legendary breathability ensures comfort is maintained when you're working hard.

Generous pockets provide quick access to your essentials, an internal security pocket keeps your valuables safe and dual-tether hem drawcords prevent trailing loops getting caught on high-stepping crampon points.

A stunning, versatile, single layer.

A winter favourite Reviewed By Gary, 22 May 2013

A review of any product needs a really good deal of 'testing'. Well I bought the Bastion back in November and it has only now been stored away after a full and long winter use. I live and work in The Cairngorms and the winter we have just enjoyed really put the Bastion to test. I hardly had the jacket off my back. It coped well in very low, high wind chill temperatures. I would only ever need a small microfleece underneath as well as a base layer. On the more 'balmy' days, ie just below freezing, a base layer was all that I needed. I wore it when working hard, with a large snow holing rucksack or walking/climbing fast. I never ever got chilled down despite sweating so it wicked really well. Even with a waterproof shell over it it worked well brilliantly and never overheated or got damp. I never wear soft shells in rain but I did test out the Bastion in snowfall and again it coped well and kept me dry. The hood fits well and when fully zipped up you are nicely cocooned inside. It's roomy enough for a helmet too. My only slight niggle were the cuffs which are nice and snug, not restricting but need a good tug to look at your watch-only a very, very slight niggle! Feels a shame to put it away for the winter!

Brilliant, Warm and Light Reviewed By Andrew, 18 Apr 2013

Great item of kit. Very light, packs down small. Warm enough to wear with just a tee shirt even in a good blow, but room to have a light weight fleece on under as well for extra warmth. Fits well with good arm length.

Superlight, warm, well made, good buy Reviewed By Robert, 29 Mar 2013

Replaced a heavyweight fleece/softshell and rock solid hardshell with three lightweight mix-and-match layers including this Bastion. Gives much better flexibility. The Bastion does the job - when stopped and cooling down or in a brisk wind. Packs down to nothing.

Fantastic Jacket!!!!! Reviewed By JIM, 19 Sep 2012

Brilliant item of technical clothing! A great alternative to Down Insulation (no annoying feathers poking out!). I wish I had purchased one earlier rather than continuing to use goose down!!
