The Mountain Equipment Shield jacket is the soft shell that you always wanted. Sure it won't handle torrential rain but it can put up with most other conditions and its more comfortable, stretchier and cooler looking than any hard shell you will encounter.


The Shield Jacket is particularly suited to Alpine use where the stretch fabric comes into it's own and you are also more likely to encounter snow showers than hard rain. Benefits include ample smart pockets, water resistant zips, a serious hood and intelligent use of Polartec Poweshield inserts. When these design features are combined with Gore Windstopper Soft Shell fabric the result is a really smart and highly usable garment.

Fantastic Jacket - worth the money Reviewed By Christopher, 28 Mar 2013

I must admit, despite its consistently good reviews, I was sceptical about this jacket. Could it really justify it's hefty price tag?
Having deliberated long and hard before spending £200 on a soft shell I finally took the plunge and haven't regretted it for a second since.
Top notch piece of kit, the fit is excellent and it manages to feel reasonably light & durable at the same time.
Where it really wins for me though is in performance. I have worn this jacket in all manner of conditions in the hills throughout the winter and it has never let me down. Even in the recent sub zero temperatures it has done the trick over a good thermal base layer without the need for a jacket. Although it doesn't claim to be waterproof I have found that it can take a fair soaking without me getting wet!
My experience here would certainly encourage me to buy this brand again in the future, quality kit with top performance is a winning combination in my book.
I must confess I also think its a smashing looking jacket which although a personal taste is the icing on the cake for me.
Thoroughly recommended.

How much?! Is probably what you're thinking, but it is money well spent! Lightweight, warm, windproof and well built. I have yet to come across weather bad enough to test its waterproofness fully but so far, it has kept me dry through short heavy bursts of rain, and longer drizzly periods. I wear it a lot for mountain biking as its a nice close fit, with good manouverability. I would almost say it is too warm, a decent base layer underneath is all I have ever needed underneath it. Truly an all round brilliant jacket, and Highly recommended!

Why Mountain Equipment makes sense Reviewed By Michael, 30 Jun 2012

As a member of the Armed Forces I have over the years spent a fortune on walking/outdoor equipment. I bought this jacket to take on this years Army Alpine Challenge and it did not disappoint. The fit is excellent and the build quality faultless. The attention to detail shown by the maker is to be commended and while the price tag may make many walk away i always go by "buy cheap, buy twice. Over all superb quality no complaints.

This might have a slightly heavy price tag for some but it is definitely worth every penny.

I have had the jacket over a year now and it comes with me everywhere from trips to North Wales to trips to the shops and has shown no signs of wear even with all I have put it through.

I brought the jacket originally just to use it out hiking but I quickly found it works very well for climbing too with its 2 way zip for access to my harness and a big enough hood that can comfortably fit my helmet in it.

Once again Mountain Equipment have produced another excellent piece of gear and because they have I now find myself needing to buy another one because my other half keeps using mine!

As always with Mountain equipment products it’s faultless. Used for the first time on Ben Ime a week after I bought it and soon realised it is surprisingly waterproof for a soft-shell and highly breathable. Can't wait 2 use it in the Scottish winter! I would buy one again, not that I will need 2 of course because mountain equipment products and built to last, would recommend to anyone.
