used for backpacking

This feature-rich load hauler has a comfortable back system, light-but-tough fabrics, and includes a few intelligent extras that don't overcomplicate things. These include underarm pole storage, a large central access panel, an emergency hipbelt buckle (which you can remove from the additional lumbar pack), and alternatively sited female clips for your compression straps in case you're carrying smaller loads.

Verdict: A well designed, comfortable pack

Excellent Build Quality And Design

Reviewed By Reace, 11 May 2012

What a comfortable pack! I bought mine 8 weeks ago and the first thing I did was load it up with my usual weighty camping kit and hit some local trails around Snowdon. The first thing I noticed is that instead of carrying the usual weight, it felt more like carrying half the weight and more like my day pack. (the weight distribution is fantastic)
The custom fit hip belt is just great! awesome design idea! Its such a simple Idea and it completely sets this pack apart from many others in my opinion. The shoulder straps are shaped/contoured to fit to perfection.
You cant go wrong with the warranty either with a lifetime guarantee, how awesome is that? But not really surprising when you get your hands on it and realise just how well built this pack is.
The removable top pocket is a nice design feature but not one that I think I will use. I was put off before purchasing by some reviews saying it didn't have enough pockets, but with the large lid pocket with loads of room for the usual wet weather gear hat and gloves, front pocket, 2 side pouches for drinks/maps and a large centre access J-zip, bottom access and top loading access, this pack doesn't need lots of different pockets and my concerns have been quickly put to rest.
Another excellent feature is the trekking pole under arm carry system (Stow-On-The Go),I find this great for quickly putting my poles out of the way for those quick scrambles.
I have owned a few packs of similar promise before and I have to say this is one of the most comfortable packs I have ever used and will most likely out live all of them.
If you get this pack you will not be disappointed as long as you keep it within the reasonable expectations of the pack. Its a great moderately extended hiking, backpacking pack. Top Mark!

Top Quality

Reviewed By , 12 Aug 2011

A top quality rucksack that you would expect from Osprey. It swallows a hell of a lot of gear. Personally, I would like more pockets and compartments but the Osprey way is to keep things simple and lightweight. The bag is very comfortable and great to adjust. It handled a very heavy load very well and the adjustments to bring the bag into your body or away is brilliant. I do not think it handles small loads as well as what they claim, the top cover doesn't sit very well. It would also been nice to get a rain cover which does bump the cost up a little. You definitley will not regret purchasing this bag unless you are the type of person who likes everything to be organised into individual pockets.

Solid Performance

Reviewed By Michael, 26 Jul 2011

Purchased the Aether70 from the Preston Branch,May 2011. Having explained to Andy that I had never purchased a large rucksack before, he proceeded to show me through various designs and their related pros and cons. Nothing was to much trouble. There were more expensive rucksacks on offer, but having measured ,fitted and trying on of the Aether, we both decided that this was the rucksack for me. The rucksack didn,t fail to deliver or disappoint in all areas. It was used to take all my kit across to the Isle of Jura to compete in the annual fell race. The bag felt secure, comfortable and stable. Access to the kit was made easier through the front zip compartment. Hopefully it will put in another stalwart performance on the Isle of Syke Easter 2012. I would strongly recommend the Aether 70 to any one who loves the great outdoors. 5 stars for the service and advice Andy, job well done

Overall good with a few problems

Reviewed By Patrick, 04 May 2011

I've had my Osprey Aether for 3 years now and it is by far the most comfortable rucksack that I've ever owned. It is very well thought out and easy to use.

Also after over 500 miles of walking it's in pretty good condition with just a few nicks to the fabric.

The only downside that I've found is that when carrying heavy loads (about 25kg) the suspension system has snapped, fortunately Osprey fixed it for me free of charge.

Overall though it was a very good purchase and has served me well.
