The Shadow Hoodie is a durable, great-fitting mountain fleece that offers excellent wind-resistance combined with maximum stretch and movement. This rugged 'superfleece' from Rab has enhanced wind and abrasion resistance utilising Polartec Wind Pro® fabric and Hardface technologies. The fact that Polartec Wind Pro® doesn't use a membrane ensures that the Shadow Hoodie is still incredibly breathable whilst being 4 times more wind-resistant than standard fleece - so perfect for active pursuits in all conditions. As an ideal mid layer to wear when climbing, the Shadow Hoodie is cut to fit comfortably under a harness and for added protection from wind, the hood fits snugly under a helmet. The cuffs have integrated thumb loops too, preventing sleeves riding up when you stretch.

used for general outdoor antics

A great item in your kit arsenal, the special fabric used for the shadow hoodie resists water, wind and abrasion thanks to some scientific wizardry by Polartec. It may sound like a soft-shell, but this is simply a very tough fleece. As such I've never worried about it being damaged by trees, rocks, brambles or long hikes with a heavy pack. There are thumb-loops and a close-fitting hood for climbers, but this is a high-quality midlayer that can be used by any outdoor enthusiast.

Verdict: A super-versatile fleece

Terrific mid-layer windstopper Reviewed By Rich, 07 May 2013

This is a terrific jacket.

Everyone has a slightly different fit - I'm quite tall and slim and some brands just don't fit me that well. It just so happens that Rab products fit me perfectly.

I currently own a Rab Baltoro Alpine windstopper, which I love. It comes walking, climbing, and to the beach with me. But in preparation for some more serious adventures, I wanted something as a mid-layer to wear underneath my current jacket but over my base-layer.

This was the perfect solution. It's a bit thicker than a micro-fleece so doesn't squash down quiet as small, but is still fairly compact and light.

Bonus points, however, for breathability. I usually run quite warm and so am very cautious of over-heating. This fleece is brilliant, I feel suitably ventilated, even when exerting myself. It's comfortable to wear climbing, fits a harness perfectly and can deal with the change in pace from a strenuous multi-pitch to standing around for 20 minutes on a belay.

To top it off, it looks good. It's a sexy grey, a snug fit, and goes perfectly over a t-shirt for a trip down the pub, or for a bike ride round the park.

Even better than expected Reviewed By Peter, 03 May 2013

I bought this last weekend as I needed a new fleece and I needed something a bit harder wearing for my trip to the alps in the summer. Wore it all weekend in the Lake District and I cannot fault it! Saturday it was blue skies and quite warm, this kept the wind off perfectly but was so breathable that I never got too hot either. The friends I was with were constantly putting layers on and off where as this regulated my body temperature perfectly and I wasn't changing layers at all. On Sunday the weather was very wet, very windy and very foggy. Again this fleece coped perfectly with keeping the strong wind off me, still keeping me at a good temperature even with full waterproofs on over the top and was even water resistant in the drizzle. So comfortable to wear due to the stretchy material and fleece material inside. Thumb holes in the sleeve are always appreciated as well. Looking forward to using this during my Three Peaks Challenge this weekend and will be looking forward to taking it out to the Alps with me. High pockets on the chest will be great for keeping my hands warm whilst wearing a harness. Very pleased! Only slight downside is that because it's quite fitted I have heard a few threads snap when I've put it on. However that's probably just me being careless.

Excellent fleece Reviewed By Clifford, 04 Mar 2013

A warm fleece with good fit but without the bulk. Just as good on the High Street as it is on the hill.

Best fleece ever! Reviewed By Simon, 06 Dec 2012

Bought mine from Rock bottom for £80 but would now happily pay £130 for it.
The fit is great with an active cut and enough stretch to allow good movement, the hood is a complete bonus and adds to the versatility.
I wear mine with a light fleece or gillet underneath or a light weight hard shell over the top,or simply on its own as its ultra warm either way it always in my kit.

Brilliant! Reviewed By Sam, 01 Mar 2012

I wore my rab shadow hoodie for a whole week in snowdonia, it upsets me to ever take it off. It performed really well as a mid layer up snowden on a terrible winter day with a latok alpine over the top. Good for drizzle with the water resistant finish. I really love the hood, I was unsure about the hood, but it fits really well on your neck when down and way better than any hat when up, the system works so well to keep your temperature just right. Also I loved being able to vent hot air by opening the zips on the front. I don't think anyone could make a better mid layer.

Will become an essential part of your kit Reviewed By Fabricio, 07 Feb 2012

I bought this from the local Cotswold store, I soon came to realise that I would use it much more often than previous fleeces thanks to its design and comfort. It will become even more comfortable after first wash. Arm neck length are ideal to help with the colder days out there. Better wind protection it's true however not as warm as other regular fleeces so beware of this. Five stars because it's really been a great acquisition and I can't say I find any issues with it. Design also allows it easily under an outer shell should you need it when rain or weather change. Not waterproof or water resistant. I think it dries quicker than regular thicker fleeces however not as quick as other synthetic garments due to still being a fleece after all. As a summary this is a good fit for every occasion

Fantastic multipurpose fleece Reviewed By Andrew, 02 Jan 2012

I have owned a Shadow Hoodie for over a year now; whilst initially reticent to spend such a large amount on a fleece, it has proven itself as a very versatile item of clothing. Earlier reviews referred to switching around the hem on the wrists coming undone but I have not suffered that with my fleece.

On very windy days, you would benefit from throwing a windproof layer over the top but I have worn this fleece from summer through to winter. The DWR lasted very well but I have only washed the fleece in 'technical' detergent.

Highly recommended as a piece of clothing for use hiking, camping and on the way to the office.
