lacing system failure Reviewed By Dorota, 13 Jan 2013

I wrote a review of these over half a year ago, and all seemed great. However, about 5 months into wearing the boots I noticed they started letting water in quite noticeably. They'd be re-proofed every couple of weeks and I'd only wear them about once/twice a week on average, so it wasn't a result of abuse - what I noticed though is that the thin LACES CUT INTO THE FABRIC in a few places!! This is clearly a faulty design - surely laces shouldn't be slicing the boots just by being tightened?

Once again the staff in the Salisbury and Cardiff shops have been incredibly helpful and I had the shoes replaced in a couple of days without a problem. I immediately changed the laces (the quick pull system goes out of the window here, but I do like the boots themselves enough not to have gone away with a refund). Hopefully this re-laced pair will now work for longer than half a year without developing a fault, but I slightly lost confidence in Salomon footwear, ergo the 3 stars.

Disappointed Reviewed By Anna, 08 Oct 2012

I bought these three months ago for light walking and some running. Initially I was delighted, but the longer I wear them the less I like them.
Positives:
- Yes, they are light, a bit like a cross between a boot and a trainer, which is exactly what I was looking for.
- There was no breaking in, they were very nice and soft from the start.

Negatives:
- The lacing: The quick-lacing system means that it's not possible to adjust the laces to lighten pressure on individual lace points. The system relies on very thin laces, which loops through some hard, small cleats. Presumably the quick-pull mechanism only works by having a comparatively small number of cleats. This results in a lot of pressure exerted on individual cleats. On my feet, this has started causing almost unbearable pressure pain on top of the foot from one of the cleats. I have overcome this to SOME extent by cutting the lace at the top (thereby removing the quick-pull function) and re-lacing them to include a couple of extra turns before and after the painful cleat. But it’s still uncomfortable. The thin laces are also so thin they cut in to the hand when pulling – another disadvantage of this stupid system.
Not waterproof: To start with, I didn’t wear them in wet conditions, so this didn’t become apparent. Recently, I have been walking through wet grass (note – not even rain!) – and my socks have been getting wet in spots! This is just rubbish!
The fit: They really are too wide for my feet (and slightly too short). I should never have bought them, but somehow this has become more pronounced the longer I have worn them.
Conclusion:
I’m really disappointed by these, especially the quick-lacing system which has absolutely zero advantages compared to standard lacing, only disadvantages. The cleats are seriously uncomfortable. And they are not waterproof at all!
Back to Merrell for my next light boots!

Excellent lightwight and comfy :-) Reviewed By Caroline, 17 Sep 2012

Bought these a few months ago, after trying on numerous pairs of boots on in the Brighton store. They are going to be used for the Inca Trail Trek in Peru, so needed them to be light and waterproof. Have walked most weekends over the South Downs a minimum of 10 mileseach time and they have been really comfortable. Would definately recommend these

Great all round boots Reviewed By Lucinda, 15 Aug 2012

Very very comfortable and light -it doesn't feel like you are wearing boots. I bought these as I was not sure whether to go for boots or trainers. These are a great compromise. All the comfort of trainers but the support you'd get from boots and waterproof too. I was one size up from what I would normally wear for everyday shoes.

Lightweight, comfortable waterproof boots Reviewed By Dorota, 04 May 2012

Fantastic shoes! Like the previous reviewer said - no breaking them in required, incredibly comfortable. Very lightweight and fully waterproof (they've been out on a few hikes and a number of cycles in the pouring rain and stayed perfectly dry). They are not too high around the back, so work well for cycling too.

The lacing system is grand - no wet laces to be wetting the shoes further and taking ages to dry, and no dangly bits either since all the spare cord goes in the little pocket in the tongue. Really easy to adjust too. Might be a bit of a problem to find spares though - Cotswold Outdoor could maybe start stocking them?

The only niggle - they tend to slip on some types of pavements and on manholes, but then I've had that with pretty much all hiking boots so far. Strange that my trainers don't do that though!

Staff in the Salisbury shop were incredibly nice and helpful and actually recommended these boots (when I was about to grab something else because I didn't even notice them on the shelf!). Walked out of the shop wearing them :)

Happy feet! Reviewed By , 01 May 2012

Great shoe. If you have wide feet this should be good for you, although note I did buy it 1 shoe size up. I wanted a shoe for MTB, walking and possibly a bit of trail running, so far the first two options have been covered and am very happy.

Great day hiking boots Reviewed By Marilyn , 23 Apr 2012

Absolutely fantastic boots, NO breaking them in, very light but durable even in mud! Would highly recommend these boots definitely designed for a womens' foot, not like some.

Great Lightweight Boots Reviewed By Nicola, 02 Apr 2012

Was bought these recently for my birthday, they are so comfy and light I barely feel like I'm wearing boots , but they still feel like they are giving me a decent amount of support as they hug my feet nicely. Am very pleased with them.
