The ideal approach shoe should be tough, well protected and provide enough support for easy climbing but comfy enough for the approach walk.  The Crux takes technologies that have been developed in Scarpa's trekking and climbing range and combines them to give a hybrid that has all of the characteristics required to be a top approach shoe.   Toughness is provided by using quality suede in the upper, a rubber toe and heel rand gives protection whilst the Vibram Vertical sole with sticky rubber, tough EVA midsole and forefoot cradle system ensures support and confidence. It’s not just the colour that’s green, they’re made using 50% recycled polyester in the lining and mesh!

Impressive light walking shoe Reviewed By Dieter, 15 Jun 2012

I bought this shoe 3 weeks ago to wear on a long weekend walking in the Alpes Maritimes (South of France). Apart from wearing them around town, I put the shoes through some fairly rigorous use - several hours hiking in steep terrain each day, about 30% off the path scrambling to reach a summit. This included some 2 hours hiking across extended patches of wet spring snow. The verdict: these shoes are excellent. They have fantastic grip on rock and boulders. Even though they have no Goretex lining, they withstood hours in wet conditions without showing any signs of penetrating wetness (I had followed Scarpa's instructions and treated them with Nubuck spray when they arrived). They are very easy to tie across the top of your foot so that my toes never touched the front of the shoe even in the steepest descents. No bruised, black toenails for once! Perhaps because there is no Goeretex lining, the shoes coped very well with evacuating sweat. They never felt overly clammy or damp. Scarpa have achieved quite a feat with this product, because this shoe feels as cushioned as a trainer on tarmac and yet stepping onto pointed rocks/stones on and off the trail they are sufficiently firm to protect the feet. I rate them as one of my best outdoor purchases ever. The only thing I cannot comment on is their durability. Only time will tell how they stand up over several years use.
