The North Face Men’s McMurdo Parka is a signature down parka for base camp, mountain and polar epics. Equally at home in icy windswept cities, this rugged parka is built to withstand wild, wet weather and freezing conditions.

Vital body heat is retained by using 550 fill goose down insulation inside its waterproof HyVent shell. For a cleaner silhouette, the insulated hood can be detached, as can the faux fur trim. A wealth of pockets means bags of room for base camp necessities or urban commuting, and an internal water bottle pocket keeps vital hydration insulated and flowing. Velcro wrist cuffs, waist and hem cinch cords allow you to lock down and lock out the elements.

Built as an expedition down jacket for unfriendly icy weather and snow-covered adventures, the McMurdo also makes a great jacket for anybody standing around for extended periods in less-than-favourable conditions, from film crews to birdwatchers to anybody waiting for a dog to fetch!

North Face tested @ minus 45 Reviewed By J., 16 May 2013

This was the jacket I brought for a trip to "Far Easten Russia" 3 regions, Amur,Siberia,Sakha, I experienced temperatures of minus 45 and I found that this coat was more than adequate with base and mid layers, the down filled hood was a comfort and needed, though it could do with a wire to keep it in place closed up apart from not having glove tags on the cuffs, it performed very very well.
Now need to buy the wife one!!!.

Best winter coat ever! Reviewed By Luke, 22 Feb 2013

I bought this coat just before we had the snow and this is the best North Face coat I have ever owned. You only need to wear a t-shirt underneath and you are still warm enough. Loads of pockets in all the right places this coat will last me years!

Excellent winter jacket Reviewed By Peter, 10 Feb 2013

I can't believe how warm and cosy this jacket is, and it has masses of storage pockets. Although winter is nearly over for this year (2013), the jacket has earned its keep so far and I am looking forward to giving it a 'good thrash' next winter.

The name says it all – McMurdo Reviewed By Graham, 01 Feb 2013

The McMurdo Parka is a great insulated jacket - long, adjustable, robust and very warm. The only poor design feature is the hood, which no matter how I try will not be adjusted so as not to hang down over the face. Other than that it is an excellent down filled, waterproof coat which is ideal for any sedentary winter outdoor activity be it bird watching, touchline patrol, or watching the kids toboggan, and all for £199. I bet Archie McMurdo would have loved to wear one in Antarctica in 1841!

This is one exceptional outdoor wear jacket. Reviewed By George, 28 Jan 2013

I am a very Landscape photographer and also a keen birdwather and photographer. I have looked around at other stores for something really suitable for not so pleasant weather condition. I eventually chose the Mens McMurdo Parka Jacket for its suitability to keep me warm. A further added bonus is the 6 front facing pockets which can take some of the odds and sods and general equipment that one accumulates in photography, such as lenses and filters, ideal for carrying those items. All in all I am glad I came across this product as I was beginning to feel the cold when outside photographing wildlife. A really exceptional functional jacket that I would wholeheartedly recommend.

Superb Jacket, Excellent Price Reviewed By Andrew, 24 Jan 2013

At £199, it's the cheapest I found this anywhere. With the recent very cold weather, I have been able quickly to find out how good this jacket is. Brilliant. The goose down fill compacts down significantly for short-term storage, and then fluffs up to give superb thermal qualities. Wearing fewer layers underneath than I would have needed with my old coat, I was snug and very comfortable. Not been able to check the waterprroking, but I get the impression that it will do the job.
Check your size - the jacket comes up rather large; I would usually take a large, but a medium was plenty big enough for me and a large would have swamped me.

Nice jacket.... but..... Reviewed By N, 20 Jan 2013

Look, great jacket, pricey side, but well made.

Negatives
1 - the hood is stupid, its so damn big it flops over your eyes, adjustment is terrible.
2 - The filling on the arms slips round the back, so on cold windy days you have a cold spot on your arms.

Other than that, its ok. But to be honest, I usually reach for my Rab Ascent instead of this or as an alternative to this jacket which I also have is the Jack Wolfskin Fairbanks, almost identical with less filling, but lighter, less restrictive, and a decent adjustable hood.

All in all, you are paying for the name on this coat, there is better out there.

The only winter coat you will ever need Reviewed By James, 15 Jan 2013

The North Face Mcmuro parka.
I have had many a Down and synthetic fill jackets and coats. But from everyday to Basecamp this is an absolute must for everyone. This Parka is very warm and completely waterproof. The outer of the Parka is very robust with a detachable large hood with a fur trim again that is detachable. With 6 body pockets and one arm pocket there is plenty of room to store all you necessities. If that was not enough there is a water bottle pocket a large mesh pocket for gloves etc and a zipped security
Pocket.
Also with cinch cords for the waist and hem to keep drafts out. On the cuffs there are Velcro tighteners.
Maybe a bit pricey but for a quality peice of kit to me it seems very good value for money.

Exactly as claimed. Reviewed By Richard, 14 Jan 2013

I bought this just as the sale started. At £199 it is reasonable value. At £320 it is too expensive. However, now I have got it, it works fine. Was out over weekend watching sport - sedentary activity - and it kept me warm. Less layers required than my previous coat! Quite happy, so far. I have not yet figured out how to best adjust the hood, as the hood volume is much too big for my hood. When I figure that out, it will be brilliant.

Deals with the cold by making you sweat! Reviewed By Angus, 26 Aug 2012

Never let me down over several years of expeditions, worked well as part of my kit in fair extremes of Chamonix & Norway winter conditions.
This is not a lightweight jacket, it does take up space but works like a charm when it comes to the crunch of staying warm & mobile.
Combined with other sensibly thought out kit this jacket offers returns that outweigh it's initial price.
bulky yes (naturally it's down) so will need drying & airing maintenence, however this comes easily to you as it becomes a trusted friend for harsh conditions.

Do look at other jackets first if only to compare them to this.

Exceellent jacket. A greater ability to contol the
hood eg with wire inside would improve it further. Also hood controls a bit fiddly especially with gloves on!

Excellent, warm. The hood adjustment could be better-maybe wire to hold in place as in some others I've had before. Also quite fiddly to locate and use and impossible with golves on!
