Last summer I had the luck of venturing up the lakeland fells week after week in nothing but blazing sunshine. This year I felt limited as I didn't have a tonne of cash and also hadn't invested in the right level of kit, most importantly, no waterproof cag/jacket.
I looked around Keswick for a good few hours, and couldn't find a better deal for what I wanted than this jacket. I found the red colour to my suiting, I am a small build and torso size, whilst tall, and the small size jacket fits great, leaving room to breath without feeling at all baggy, and even with room to slip a fleece or hoody beneath it should I need insulation as well as the weatherproofing.
Up at the top of scafell pike, it was perfect to test this. It wasn't cold, in fact if not for being in a storm cloud, it was t-shirt weather and humid, so many jackets would risk leaving you steamed up and having to decide between getting soaked in the cloud and rain, or being wrapped in a yacky tent of your own heat and sweat etc... This jacket breathed well, provided secure feeling proofing from the high winds, seamless waterproofing keeping me bone dry beneath, as well as the things I had in it's pockets. The hood both detaches if need be, or rolls up neatly into the collar. A nice cosy soft lining around the inner collar adds a feel of luxury that some designs would instead leave harsh material rubbing against the neck and shoulders.
It dealt with a bit of harsh ice, leaning on rocks, and could well have suffered scuffs if it wasn't very durable. Despite some scrambling and light bouldering, as well as sitting on rocks etc, it had nothing more than a few muddy slithers on it which washed off to be good as new - no scuffs or scratches.
My first investment in a proper waterproof since I used to use my dad's old oversized (but build-like-a-tank Berghaus) - and I will not regret it.
At its RRP, it would be a great value investment, and at the offer I got it at (£40 off RRP) it really is a superb deal that should be seriously considered if you're after a performance level waterproof that doesn't force you to boil up, and stands out a bit from the more cliche north face and berghaus standards.
5 stars through and through.
