I absolutely detest umbrellas and I have to walk through London to get to work so when it's a rainy day it's like running the gauntlet and there's every risk you'll lose an eye. So, not wishing to be responsible for somebody else's eye loss, I always rely on my coats to keep me dry. I previously bought a Jack Wolfskin 3-in-1 coat and absolutely loved it but it had one failing - length. I'd bought a waist-length one that kept the top half of my body warm and dry without a problem but my legs, and especially my thighs, would get utterly soaked and meant I had to sit on a train for an hour gently steaming away in real discomfort. This Gracefield coat, however, seems to have solved my problems.
I'm 5'7" and have bought the size small (size 10) which comes to just over halfway down my thighs (I would have liked it a little longer but have a feeling this is to do with the general perception that people who buy smaller sized clothes are also short people). Having said that I went out in the driving rain the other day and stayed perfectly dry, even my thighs so it's clearly long enough to do the job. The arms are also nice and long which I also find is lacking in many other smaller sized coats and there's no restriction of movement in the shoulders.
The inner lining is a really comfortable insulated nylon coat that would make an excellent coat on its own in reasonably chilly temperatures but what really keeps you warm is the windproof Texapore outer. When I'm wearing this coat it genuinely feels like the wind is completely missing me and to have that sensation extended down to my knees is the real advantage of this longer coat.
In all, it's exactly what I expect from Jack Wolfskin - the coat has been well thought out, has all the pockets where you expect them, has the attention to detail such as a nice deep hood so you can wear a hat underneath but is adjustable if you don't, pays attention to the fact that it is a woman wearing it by cutting nice elegant lines, and fundamentally it just works. This is genuinely a coat for life!
