Sustainable water purification
Reviewed By Jonathan, 16 Jul 2013

This is a hand powered mechanical filter, and as such is a sustainable solution to the problem of obtaining safe drinking water on long treks. Sterilising devices using UV light are available on the market at the same price, but these electrical devices have been reported to fail in the middle of a trek. The filter proved reliable on repeated use during a long trek, and it has the advantage that virtually any water source can be used. Although it weighs around 300g, this is only the weight of 300ml of water, and since by increasing the number of water sources that can be used it significantly reduces the amount of water that you have to carry, in most circumstances it actually reduces the total weight to be carried. It is easy to use, and works best if you have a companion hold the outlet tube in a bottle while you do the pumping. A prefilter makes sure that the microbiological filter is not needlessly clogged with larger particles. Cotswold offers a discount to members of the National Trust or English Heritage, and if this is taken into account, the price is the best on offer.

Effective purifier
Reviewed By luke, 20 Mar 2011

I bought this water purifier for my expedition that I went on with college, in the Lake District. We set up camp next to a steady flowing stream. I collected water in the morning for breakfast. This purifier worked spectacular, the water tasted cleaner than tap water and more over it was fresh and cold. It is easy to use, although I do find it difficult to remove the cartridge at first due to it being stiff. The instructions that it comes with are fantastic, easy to read and in many languages. It also gives you tips on how to make your purifier last so you can use it again.
