Superb Boots
Reviewed By S, 29 Mar 2015

AS promised I am now updating my initial review having tested out the boots. First time out after wearing them around the house for a few hours was a dry ascent of Yr Aran and Snowdon. Fitted very comfortably, no chaffing in the heel and instep regions. The unevenness of the paths up and down did not trouble the performance of the boots plus grip on a mixture of surfaces was excellent. the reinforced toes were excellent as I tend to kick loose and fixed stones quite frequently. Soles of my feet were not sore in any area after seven hours of walking.
Second time out consisted of three days of good Welsh wet weather - the watertightness was excellent - given that I was wearing gaiters, no water was able to wick down to the boots via the trouser bottoms and socks. On the second day the ground conditions included unavoidable casual water on paths, peat bogs & mud and some very wet vegetation. Still no ingress and most important of all - no blisters. My Mammut boots previous to these would be comfortable on one walk and generate monster blisters on another, with no pattern
So far the boots have performed to a level where I can thoroughly recommend them, I would earnestly encourage any prospective buyer to undertake a thorough measurement of your feet and to try on several pairs. At Cotswold you are able to have an in depth fitting, trial several pairs and discuss in some depth the fit and feel of the boots.
I shall seriously consider using Cotswold again and these Meindl boots if the model is still available in the future.

New boots
Reviewed By Stephen, 19 Feb 2015

Bought these boots today. Seem to be a great fit. Mark, the assistant, was at great pains to ensure I had the correct fitting boots. He undertook a detailed foot measurement, and then disappeared to the stockroom, returning with 4 different boxes of boots to try on. After 25 minutes or so of walking around the store, testing them and on the little slope I decided to purchase the Meindl soft line gtx boots. After a few weeks I shall update this initial review or provide a new one to relate my findings of the comfort after walking a few fells.

Fantastic boot so far
Reviewed By ALEX, 05 Feb 2015

Fantastic grip, no problems with waterproof ability and also very light. Slightly uncomfortable on the soles however, would recommend using gel insoles to soften the impact. Good boot for scrambling as the boot is rather rigid.

GREAT for walking in as long as you do not want to keep the water out. This is now the 3rd pair and our gardening watering can, is less leaky. such a shame. Cotswold have been great though, they have replaced each pair instantly. Time to change brands.

If you want waterproof boots, do not buy Meindl

Two pairs, including the replacement pair, leaked either under the sole or through the back stitching. There is much better on the market .

Very Comfortable Boot
Reviewed By Ray, 31 Dec 2013

Having seen a couple of reviews which question the waterproofing, I was a little bit unsure, but I don't live in an area which has heavy rain all day so tried them on. More comfortable than my Scarpas or my summer weight Salomans.

Not the greatest
Reviewed By Giles, 10 Nov 2013

These are a cracking pair of boots until they start getting wet!

In general terms, they are an excellent boot. The grip is superb and I have walked and scrambled in them in Scotland, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. They have handled different rock types easily and I have always felt confident in them.

Ankle support and fit are also excellent and the relatively low weight means that they are a comfortable all-day fit, regardless of the miles done. Cushioning could be a little better but it is good enough for most users.

Although quite a flexible boot, they do retain enough stiffness to be very versatile.

All this is great until it rains or you hit boggy ground, then wet feet beckon very quickly and the boots quickly become sodden. Like all lined boots, they are slow to dry and putting wet boots back on every morning for several days is dispiriting to put it mildly!

I will keep these for summer use only (the bin was very tempting for a while), both for walking and low-grade scrambling but they are designed (and marketed) for more than this.

Best I've owned
Reviewed By Geoff, 03 Jul 2013

Never tried Miendl before but was measured up at Newcastle and told they'd suit my freakishly wide feet. Took me through all my WGL training and assessment completely blister free. Only downside is when walking on Tarmac they seem hard on the soles. Change the insoles for some aftermarket and they're perfect.

Like wearing slippers
Reviewed By Paul, 23 Jun 2013

These are my first none leather pair of boots and although sceptical at first I am thrilled that I bought these at the recommendation of the sales person at Cotswold. They are supremely comfortable, waterproof and hardwearing.

I had done lots of research before buying boots as its an expensive investment and thought these were the ones. I received superb boot fitting service from the Orpington branch and they suggested I tried other boots too which was a good idea as I kept coming back to these which were so comfortable and it confirmed they were the right purchase. I prefer a boot with some substance and found these both light and robust. Ive been walking them in as suggested but not sure that it is necessary as they feel like slippers - so comfortable. Love the boots and impressive boot fitting service too.

Best 3 season boot around!
Reviewed By David, 06 Jun 2013

If you have wide feet, I would not look any further than this boot for 3 season fell walking and scrambling. Slightly stiffer and higher in the ankle than many competitors (which suits me), they are built for those rocks and rough ground. Put them on for the first time and walked for 3 hours to break them in - didn't need it. They felt like slippers.
One point on sizes, like many people I am used to buying boots a size larger than normal shoe size (I wear liner socks and medium weight Bridgedales). Because Meindl do 1/2 sizes - and thanks to Sally at the Preston store for the excellent original fitting advice - I went down 1/2 a size and they are perfect. These are wide boots, so the fitting is well recommended and don't assume you will need a full extra size. Quite possibly the best walking boots I have ever bought!

Great boot
Reviewed By Sean, 28 May 2013

I bought these from the St Albans store but got all my customer service from the Reading site (long story).
Overall this is a very good boot. Bought to supplement a well worn pair of Burma Pros which I find quite heavy these were my first choice but also the recommended boots from both sites when they'd asked questions about what I wanted and why.
These boots are very light and the difference between them and the Pros considerable. Made of fabric and suede they are maybe 20% lighter and this makes quite a difference on a walk. So far I have worn them twice, once on a break in trek around the local paths and fields and the 2nd time on a lengthy walk around the Lake District on the May Bank Holiday.
The boots really didn't need breaking in and were instantly comfortable on a 10 miler on fairly even terrain. They were excellent on the walk up Scafell Pike and Lingmell proving to be comfortable, light, breathable and totally waterproof. The rubber toe is great for deflecting all the bumps my boots normally take and so far I have no complaints.
Buy these boots if weight and comfort is high on your list but do be careful when it comes to size. I found there to be considerable differences in the same size of boots in the 2 shops I went to and also note there is very little room for stretch in them. I would also recommend a visit to the store to get the fitting service from the Cotswold people who were all great and very knowledgeable.

Excellent Boot & Excellent Fitting Service
Reviewed By Paul, 21 May 2013

Bought these boots in an emergency at the Cotswolds in Droitwich on my way to participate in the Black Mountain Challenge as my old Meindl's were beginning to hurt. The service I got in helping me choose a replacement pair of boots was second to none. 2 and half hours later I was the proud owner of another set of Meindl with inserts! I was apprehensive using them the following day for the challenge but the boots did me proud. Very comfortable and solid. Again a big thanks for the help with fitting.

Good concept but flawed

I have worn several pairs of this boot and earlier versions, boot does not stay waterproof for more than 48 hours of use in Scottish Highlands, new improved insoles end up in toe box when de-cending. The rest of the boot is just brilliant, replace insole and now being used for dry climates only

I needed a new pair of boots but as I have plantar fasciitis I was expecting problems choosing them . The fitting service was excellent and with my special insoles in the boots I find that they give a firm and comfortable fit. have not yet tried them out in adverse conditions but the sole looks to have a good grip on it

Have a reputation as a boot killer, my last pair of Meindl's last 3 years and around 2200 miles. And whilst it was sad to see them go, we had shared lots of miles in lots of countries, it is great getting a new pair.

Meindl's again, definitely the last pair despite all those miles and abuse never leaked once and never gave me blisters.

Excellent boots
Reviewed By Marc, 04 Jun 2012

I bought these boots for the Pennine way, to break them in I wore them whilst working at a festival. Wore them for 16 hour days and they still felt like slippers. Waterproofing is excellent and they are easy to clean. The complete opposite last pair of expensive boots I bought were Brashers which almost crippled me. These boots are fantastic.

Practical choice
Reviewed By Alan, 31 May 2012

I used an earlier version of this boot on the GR20 across Corsica. I needed a new pair of mountain boots for sorties into the Welsh hills. I popped up to Betws y Coed and Ben did a professional job in measuring me up. Next day straight out on the Carneddau - the boots were spot on - not a problem. If you are looking for a 3 season boot to be used below the snow line you could not choose a better.
