Mountain Equipment's polar power house, incredibly warm and easily at home in the short daylight hours of the Arctic winter.

Expedition level warmth and durability comes as standard in the Greenland Jacket. The windproof, water resistant Drilite Loft fabric, already extremely tough, is reinforced over the shoulders and sleeves for even greater abrasion resistance. Top quality Hungarian goose down is used for maximum insulating power, but to avoid heat loss through compression by rucksack straps, the shoulders are insulated with Polarloft synthetic wadding. The insulated hood is large enough to fit over a helmet, but adjusts when worn without and, like the main body of the jacket, uses Mountain Equipment's EXL system for optimal thermal efficiency. This is a simple but extremely effective idea: the lining fabric is gently elasticated to 'hug' the wearer, eliminating cold spots by allowing the down to expand and fill all available space within the jacket.

This attention to cold-weather detail extends even further: in addition to large outer cargo pockets, the Greenland boasts an internal mesh pocket to ensure your water bottle stays at body temperature, with a drinking tube retainer fitted for convenience.

Amazing Jacket
Reviewed By Kevin, 01 Oct 2013

Originally I bought this jacket for a relative working in Finland for the year, but they'd already bought themselves another jacket.

So I ended up taking it on an expedition to the Kunlun Mountains in China, where the temperatures varied from -20C to +10C whilst we were there.

Obviously, a jacket of this calibre wasn't required when the temperatures were above zero.

The jacket was incredibly warm when the temperatures plummeted below zero. The hood was actually too warm at times, but at least I was able to wear a helmet with it. The fleece lined and elasticated cuffs prevented snow from building up inside the sleeves. The hand warmer pockets were a godsend during the strong winds as we approached the tops of the higher 5000 metre peaks. So as far as warmth was concerned, the jacket lived up to the job and I didn't get too cold (just my hands, but that was more down to gloves than the jacket).

There were plenty of pockets to store a few sweets, snacks, map, compass, etc. All of which had zips.

There were only a few small things that would cause problems over time. The velcro tabs would always catch on the draw strings on zips and on the internal mesh water bottle/flask holder. The velcro is slowly wearing away at them both. However, you could always replace the draw strings with 2mm cord, but once the mesh holder goes, it's gone for good, so take care when opening and closing the zips that nothing catches the velcro- sealed storm flaps.

Despite the minor problems, it's still an amazing jacket and well worth the money. 5 Stars.
