A perfect jacket for endeavours in the vertical world

The steepest lines, the most remote expeditions, the most dependable of jackets.

The obvious features of the Tupilak already mark it out as a perfect jacket for endeavours in the vertical world, and when you probe deeper into its construction, the details confirm it. Lets start with the bits you can see. The two large pockets are in "Napoleon" configuration on the chest: easy to get at when you need to stuff things quickly away, and unrestricted by a harness. You'll find pit zips under the arms for venting when you're really working hard, and the monstrous Super Alpine HC hood is not only big enough to house the biggest of climbing helmets, but its inner silicone grip-strips ensure that when you turn your helmeted head, the hood moves with you.

Closer inspection of the Tupilak reveals that it's cut in the latest generation of Gore-Tex Pro. For years the benchmark performance fabric, this is now tougher, notably more breathable (up to 28% more, in fact), but still just as waterproof. The ideal fabric for a mountain jacket. This exceptional fabric is given exceptional treatment too, with Mountain Equipment's Storm Construction methods employing innovative techniques and components, to ensure you get the best protection possible.

Of course, how it fits is vital. Mountain Equipment's Alpine Fit maps the jacket closely to the body, but with no restriction in the shoulders as you reach up. Even the curve of the seams has been carefully thought out to prevent the front of the jacket ballooning out and getting in the way when you bend over!

A stripped down shell for the most challenging of environments, the Tupilak has "climbing jacket" written all over it.

THE jacket
Reviewed By Callum, 22 Jan 2014

As a waterproof, Scottish and greater ranges climbing jacket, it is superb. Disclaimer; your climbing grade does not increase with money spent, but you will be considerably drier.
Believe the hype.

Incredible Jacket
Reviewed By Andrew, 02 Jul 2013

This jacket, although offering you a high price tag, gives you everything you could possibly want from a high performance waterproof. It's combination of 80D and 40D Gore Tex Pro fabrics offer a light yet extremely durable jacket which keeps you dry. Not only are you kept dry in a range of weather situations but the Tupilak is very breathable allowing this mountain equipment masterpiece to be used in almost all environments. The tupilak offers multiple pockets, both interior and exterior, which can be used to store everything from car keys to an A4 map. Mountain Equipment prides itself in the versatility of its jackets as this is shown through their ability to mould jackets to a range of users. This is possible through the toggles on the bottom and by the hood as well as the simple cuff adjusters. The hood is designed to be used for both climbing and mountaineering- Mountain Equipment have singled the hood out through making it helmet compatible for a range of helmet sizes. Finally the Tupilak offers a very comfortable fit under the shoulders and on the neck, with the wind resistant fabric insulating warmth and allowing room for a warmth layer underneath.
