The Powermonkey Extreme houses a massive 9000mAh capacity Lithium Polymer battery and offers users real power in a compact, durable shell. The unit is capable of recharging most 5V devices, including an iPhone up to 6 times, a Garmin Edge 800 up to 6 times and standard mobiles up to 12 times.

The Powermonkey Extreme has two output channels; one channel outputs 700mAh max (standard USB) whilst the DC port outputs 2.1Amps max to support the Apple iPad (iPad compatible cable included) and other tablet computers. It's worth noting that the iPad can be charged directly from the standard USB socket but will charge faster when using the supplied cable via the DC out port. It is IP67 rated, meaning it is waterproof for 30 minutes up to 1 metre - and shock resistant, the Powermonkey Extreme is perfect for the outdoor, marine & adventure enthusiast, as well as military & aid agencies.

Featuring an LCD screen which displays battery capacity level and working status (on/off), its unique one touch friction swipe on/off control is designed so the unit can only be turned on once connected to a device and cannot be accidentally switched on when not in use.

When the 5V device or tablet computer is fully charged, the auto shut-off function means the Powermonkey Extreme will turn itself off after 2 minutes, so the user does not have to monitor the charge state of the device being charged - thus saving power. The unit can be recharged in three ways; via the universal mains charger, via the solar panel or via USB. Whilst it is recharging, the LCD screen will be red, once fully charged, the screen will turn green, when it is in use, the screen will be blue.

Not that useful!
Reviewed By Neil, 27 Nov 2014

I bought one of these for a trip to Spain last year.
Whilst I agree with other reviewers that both the battery and the solar panel are well made and come in a natty pouch, complete with all the connectors you could possibly need, I was somewhat unimpressed with the performance of the "system".
The battery is a chunky, heavy (for backpacking) bit of kit and was able to charge my Samsung S4 without needing a "top-up", the solar panel took ages to recharge the battery.
I left it in the Spanish sun for two days, pretty much from dawn 'till dusk and the battery only charged to about 85% of its full capacity, which is disappointing for a bit of kit costing £120.
I don't know how that compares to the competition but I really would have expected better performance from this charger.

+ Well engineered and solid bit of kit.
+ Large battery capacity.
+ Loads of connectors for all sorts of phones etc.
+ Comes in a natty, protective pouch.

- Solar panel not up to the job - Takes at least 3 days to fully recharge the battery, assuming constant sun.
- heavy - Too heavy for backpacking.
- Those adapters are small and fiddly . . I've already lost the micro USB adapter so I'm using a standard USB cable

By all means buy it for the battery capacity but don't expect too much of the solar panel, especially in typical English weather!

All you need when you don't have a plug socket!

I was reluctant to spend this amount of money on a charger, but was pleasantly surprised.

On a full charge it can easily fully charge my iPad 2 once and off the same charge, fill my Nokia Lumia 920 battery twice.

All I do is make sure it's fully charged at home before leaving, then every morning whilst having breakfast stick the solar panel on top of the tent to top it up for an hour or so. I've done 3 days and nights so far without the national grid (it will go for longer). .

Would recommend to anyone.

Top quality piece of equipment
Reviewed By Reace, 20 May 2012

Top quality piece of equipment, the build quality is without fault, soft waterproof rubber grip on both the battery pack and solar panel with soft poaches for all accessories and adaptors with a perfectly formed carry case for both panel and battery. The solar panel has a green LED to indicate charging power and if you listen carefully you will hear a high pitch sound which at it’s highest indicates that it’s at optimal trajectory to the sun even in dull conditions. This unit will charge both Ipad and Iphone at the same time and same speed as plugging then into the mains power. Fantastic piece of equipment to have handy if you’re going out for a couple of days or a couple of months, with an attachment for every rechargeable device and plug attachment for every county and the solar panel for where there is no power at all, what more could you need.
