We used if in Nepal and didn't get any bugs from the water so it must be ok.
The batteries ore expensive - £8, and because they are lithium you can't carry spares on aircraft. The four required are supposed to last for quite a few litres 180-210 I think, so that ought to cover most trips. After a coldish night I got an indicator to say the batteries needed changing but as the temperature warmed up this did not recur. The instructions do warn against this.

Easy to use, does what it says on the label. Anything that can convert Delhi tap water into something safe to drink is genius.
Slightly bulky, but worth it.

This is an absolutely great bit of kit for wilderness camping. I bought it as a replacement after giving my original to my son. Basically it enables you to safely take and drink fresh water from mountain streams without having to use nasty tasting sterilising tablets. Instead you simply insert the steripen into a litre of water where it emits an ultra violet light which kills any nasty organisms that might be there, leaving the water tasting clean and pure. I've used it in the Welsh mountains, Dartmoor, the Scottish Highlands, the Pyrenees and the Turkish Kackars. It means you can trek in the wild for days without having to carry a load of heavy water. Brilliant!
I suppose it's quite expensive initially but, if you're into wilderness treks, well worth it in the long run. (Once bought, the running costs are minimal. It's obviously a good idea to carry a spare set of AA batteries but they don't actually need replacing very often.)
