A worthy companion
Reviewed By Adam, 09 Aug 2013

"alone, exposed, 3000 feet,
above the seas below,
deeper into misty paths I rise...
'gainst gravity, my legs compete,
and upwards we shall go,
clouds pass by and whisp before my eyes...
prone, up on a fell's aréte,
anxiety bestows,
loudly, gusting winds orate their cries,
across the vista, so completely,
void of other souls,
isolated, in the icy skies.

but one companion, shares the view,
and shares my every stride,
affecting not my comfort nor my speed,
holds my shoulders, stomach too,
and safely stored inside,
promises of all the kit I need,
waterproofed, a tank like build,
and looks the part as well,
the north face base camp hot shot gets first prize,
mine patiently waits to be filled,
and taken once again,
to accompany me back up to the skies.

A Quality Bag
Reviewed By Donald, 31 May 2013

I would call this an 'urban' sack as the design leans towards school/office/commuting. It has quite clean lines with not too many external straps, bungy cords or places to attach equipment.
Internally the front compartment has 9 organiser pockets, 1 of which is zipped and contains a key clip on a short cord. The zip goes right down each side of the front panel, giving easy access to all this. You can fit an A4 folio in here, but there's not quite enough room for a ring binder. If packed this compartment bulges back into the rucksack rather than outwards.
The main compartment laptop/hydration bladder pocket has a couple of nice design touches. There is extra padding at the bottom to protect a laptop and the pouch keeps it away from the sides of the pack, whilst the pack's firm foam & plastic back panel stops any knocks. The sleeve itself is thin enough that it doesn't get in the way when it's not in use. There's a neoprene pocket on the front of the pouch which will take a tablet or e-reader and a hanging tab for a bladder.
Outside you get a good shoulder harness with a chest strap and an easily removable, basic waist strap. The Daisy chain is discrete, but looks sturdy, and the top handle, although minimal, is comfy to use. The bottle pouches secure nicely with elastic drawstrings, but could do to be a little deeper.
Construction is good and the material really does look bombproof. I found it surprisingly translucent (even in grey), making it pleasantly easy to see to the bottom of the main compartment.
One improvement I would like to see, in keeping with the 'urban' styling, would be some way of keeping the loose ends of the straps tidy. Simple elastic loops around the straps work a treat and would cost pennies.
Overall I'm very pleased with this bag and hope to enjoy using it for a good few years.

Great pack!
Reviewed By Alex, 27 Apr 2013

Great padding on the back and shoulders, designed with the user in mind over long distance. Front zipper has compartments for phone, maps, and small technical equipment. Larger rear zipper compartment great for stuffing in the rain coat and other larger items that could be needed on a trip in the country! Great compression straps help keep bag closer to body and thus improving your center of gravity during long treks. Outer material can really take a beating also.

A perfect all-rounder!
Reviewed By Samuel, 05 Feb 2013

I purchased this backpack for overnight camping trips, cycling & general commuting & i'm pleased to say that it over delivers in all areas.
This is a well made product as you can expect from North-Face. The material is the same as the amazing Base Camp Duffel Bag and seems to shrug off whatever you throw at it including the weather, water resistant zips & fabric will keep your personal items nice and safe. The shoulder straps fit like a dream and spread the weight well across your shoulders and you even get a molded whistle in the chest strap in case you need to get the attention of somebody (very handy) I used the daisy chain loops on the back of the pack to attach Karabiners and take with me additional equipment. I cant recommend this backpack enough, a sturdy design, fits like a dream and keeps your gear safe from the rain (so far ive been in heavy downpours and despite me being wet all my belongings inside the Hot Shot were nice and dry.
Dont think any more about it....just go for this product and you wont be sorry.
