A great piece of kit for walking in the snow & ice
Reviewed By Derek, 08 Apr 2013

I purchased these after a recent walk in the snow covered Mournes proved a trickier than expected experience. I had them on yesterday for the first time and the difference in traction is astonishing! The spikes just bit into the compacted snow and ice and let me get on with enjoying the icy conditions underfoot.

The Yaktrax are easy to slip on over the boot and after an hours walking the right one hadn't moved but the left one had moved slightly towards the front of my boot for some reason but this caused no noticeable difference to the grip or my walking experience. No build up of snow between the spikes either so they always provided excellent grip with every step.

These are not a replacement for crampons but are excellent for that casual walk in the hills! The flexible rubberband boot grip means that these can be fixed to shoes as well as boots so an added bonus if the snow is at your front door or you needed added grip on your way to work!

Overall an excellent value for money does what it says on the tin piece of kit!

Very useful bit of kit
Reviewed By Peter, 02 Mar 2013

In the last week I've walked around 40-50 miles on a variety of snow and ice covered Alpine trails wearing my Yaktrax XTRs and they have performed extremely well. Here's a brief summary of my experiences:
- They're quick to put on and take off and pack away neatly into the sturdy, supplied canvas bag.
- They've allowed me to confidently walk up and down some remarkably steep snow and ice covered slopes.
- Take care when picking the size, especially if you're close to the boundary of two sizes. My XTRs fix perfectly on my Merrell walking shoes, but are possibly a little snug on my Berghaus walking boots (although that didn't seem to affect their performance much). Try to wear the boots you're going to use them on if/when you try them on.
- If you are making rapid progress up or down steep slopes, the spiked plates can slip out of place on the bottom of your boot and require occasional adjustment. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure if this was partly due to the sizing issue with my walking boots. However, it was only a minor inconvenience compared to the added confidence and traction they provided.
- They seem to be pretty well made. I've given them a week of solid use and they're showing no obvious signs of wear and tear.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, they're not a replacement for crampons. However, for their size and weight, they're an extremely effective and useful addition to your winter walking kit.

Great for winter walking
Reviewed By Stuart, 27 Feb 2013

I bought these for a Winter walking trip to Snowdonia in January. My boots aren't suitable for crampons, and I had no intention of ice climbing, so I decided on these as a compromise. While I wouldn't recommend them as a crampon, they enabled me to climb a grade 1 gulley with 3 - 4 feet of snow, whcih I definitely wouldn't have managed without them. Fantastic value, easy to use, lightweight and they do what they say on the tin!

Perfect and effective for icy conditions
Reviewed By Barney, 20 Jan 2013

The yaktrax are not only perfect for the cold weather and icy conditions at the moment, but they are great value for money, I didn't slip once on my walks and they can be easily packed and taken abroad without taking up that precious space. Overall, a brilliant product well worth paying for
