For most waterproof jackets, you should use a specialised technical wash, like those from Grangers or Nikwax, not standard laundry detergent. Wash it on a gentle cycle and then tumble dry on a low heat, if the care label allows, as this can help reactivate the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish.

A good indicator is when you notice that water is no longer beading up and rolling off the surface of the jacket, but instead is soaking into the outer fabric (a phenomenon known as 'wetting out'). After washing your jacket with a technical cleaner, you can apply a wash-in or spray-on re-proofer to restore its water repellency.

Standard detergents can leave behind residues that clog the pores of breathable waterproof membranes, reducing their effectiveness. They can also strip away the DWR coating on the fabric. Specialised technical washes are formulated to clean effectively without causing this damage.

The best detergent for waterproof clothing is a specialist, pH-neutral or alkaline-free cleaner designed for technical outerwear, such as Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash. These detergents clean without damaging the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating or clogging the waterproof membrane. Avoid regular detergents, fabric softeners, and powders, as they can reduce breathability and water repellency.
