Walking trousers are specifically made for outdoor activities. They use durable, quick-drying synthetic fabrics, often with added stretch, to allow for better freedom of movement and comfort on the trail. Regular trousers, especially those made from cotton or denim, can be restrictive, absorb moisture, and take a long time to dry, making them unsuitable for hiking.

Softshell trousers excel in cold/dry conditions with wind resistance and stretch, while standard walking trousers (like Montane Terra) suit warm/humid climates with breathable fabrics, zip vents, and convertible designs. Prioritise softshells for alpine hikes and standard trousers for mixed weather.

These are versatile walking trousers that have zips around the legs, usually just above the knee, allowing you to remove the lower sections and turn them into shorts. This makes them a great option for hiking in changeable weather, as you can easily adapt without having to carry an extra pair of shorts.

Look for flatlock seams, four-way stretch fabrics, and mesh-lined waistbands. Articulated knees and gusseted crotches reduce fabric strain during high-step movements.

Yes – reinforced knees, crampon-compatible cuffs (adjustable with press studs), and stretchy panels allow technical movement. Abrasion-resistant fabrics protect against rock contact.
