Gore-Tex is the benchmark for keeping water out and letting sweat escape. Mens Gore Tex jackets have a very specific construction: 3-layer builds bond the membrane between the outer fabric and the lining, giving you a single, tougher piece of material that packs down smaller and shrugs off years of pack straps and rough use. Step up to Gore-Tex Pro, and you get heavier-duty fabric built for serious abuse: scrambling, ice, repeated abrasion, the kind of punishment that would finish off a lighter shell in one season.

Buy right and look after it properly, and a Gore Tex jacket outlasts almost anything else in the wardrobe. Reproof it when the water stops beading, wash it with a technical cleaner, and you've got a jacket built to handle rain, wind, and everyday wear for years, not months.

It's a thin membrane with millions of tiny pores; small enough to block rain but large enough to let sweat vapour escape. It's laminated into the jacket fabric rather than sprayed on, so it doesn't wash off.

GORE-TEX membranes are fully waterproof, as their pores are too small for water droplets to penetrate but large enough for sweat vapour to escape. However, the outer DWR coating may wear off over time and require reapplication.

Jackets rated above 25,000mm hydrostatic head are considered completely waterproof. GORE-TEX Pro offers maximum protection in extreme weather conditions

3-layer tends to be more durable and packable, suited to serious outdoor use. 2-layer is usually cheaper and fine for general everyday wear where extreme durability isn't the priority.

Use a technical cleaner (not regular detergent), wash on a warm gentle cycle, and rinse thoroughly. Regular detergent leaves residue that can clog the membrane and reduce breathability.
