Down only works if it stays where you need it. Rab Microlight jackets use body-mapped baffles to keep warmth locked around your core, while underarms and other hot spots stay cooler and freer to move.

Inside, 700-750 fill power hydrophobic down handles temperatures down to -13°C, and keeps insulating even when damp. The Pertex Quantum shell adds a DWR coating on top, so light rain and drizzle bead off rather than soak in. All that warmth still packs down small enough to disappear into a summit pack, so there's no reason to leave it behind on longer routes. Men's and women's Microlight Alpine Jackets sit at the core of the range, alongside the Microlight Shield, with women's cuts running longer for extra coverage.

The Microlight Alpine uses 700-750 fill power hydrophobic down, rated to keep you warm down to around -13°C. That puts it firmly in proper winter territory, not just a jacket for mild autumn days.

Against most synthetic insulated jackets, the Microlight wins on warmth-to-weight, since down simply traps more heat per gram than synthetic fill. Synthetic jackets still hold the edge in sustained wet conditions, where they keep some warmth even when fully soaked through.

The Alpine version adds a longer body cut and extra coverage, which matters most if you're layering up in genuinely cold conditions. Both share the same down fill and Pertex Quantum shell, so the choice comes down to how much coverage you need on the move.

It handles light rain and drizzle well, since the DWR-treated Pertex Quantum shell sheds surface moisture and the down stays hydrophobic even if it gets damp. It's not a waterproof jacket though, so pair it with a shell for anything heavier.

Small enough to disappear into most day packs. The lightweight ripstop shell and efficient baffle construction mean you get proper winter warmth without carrying the bulk of a heavier expedition jacket.

The standard Microlight fits close to the body, so if you're planning to wear a fleece or mid-layer underneath on winter routes, sizing up one is worth considering. The longer-cut Alpine version already builds in more room, which some buyers use instead of sizing up.
