Walking trousers are specifically made for activities like walking, hiking, climbing, and backpacking. So what separates a general outdoor pair of trousers from a more specific walking trousers? While the distinction is subtle, trousers designed expressly for hiking often include more functional features, such as stretch panels for better mobility, ventilation zips for temperature control, and boot hooks to secure the hem to your footwear.

The design of a walking trouser is a large part of its performance on the trail. Features such as articulated knees provide complete freedom of movement, helpful for high steps and long ascents. For all-season versatility, convertible trousers with zip-off legs allow you to adapt quickly to changing temperatures without needing to pack a separate pair of shorts. For more demanding routes, look for trousers with reinforced panels on the knees and seat, which add resilience against abrasion.

Our range includes everything from lightweight, sun-protective trousers for summer hikes to weather-resistant softshell options for men and women, ensuring you have the right legwear for any trail.

Walking trousers are specifically made for outdoor activities. They use durable, quick-drying synthetic fabrics, often with added stretch, to allow for better freedom of movement and comfort on the trail. Regular trousers, especially those made from cotton or denim, can be restrictive, absorb moisture, and take a long time to dry, making them unsuitable for hiking.

Softshell trousers excel in cold/dry conditions with wind resistance and stretch, while standard walking trousers (like Montane Terra) suit warm/humid climates with breathable fabrics, zip vents, and convertible designs. Prioritise softshells for alpine hikes and standard trousers for mixed weather.

These are versatile walking trousers that have zips around the legs, usually just above the knee, allowing you to remove the lower sections and turn them into shorts. This makes them a great option for hiking in changeable weather, as you can easily adapt without having to carry an extra pair of shorts.

Look for flatlock seams, four-way stretch fabrics, and mesh-lined waistbands. Articulated knees and gusseted crotches reduce fabric strain during high-step movements.

Yes – reinforced knees, crampon-compatible cuffs (adjustable with press studs), and stretchy panels allow technical movement. Abrasion-resistant fabrics protect against rock contact.
