We are thrilled to be offering our customers the opportunity to make a micro-donation through Pennies’ ‘digital charity box’ at checkouts in our stores. These micro-donations will support a cause close to our hearts: protecting our planet.
In our Cotswold Outdoor, Runners Need and Snow+Rock stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we’re supporting the National Trust Woodlands Appeal. In our Scottish stores, we are supporting the National Trust for Scotland’s Footpath Fund. Read on to find out more about each of these charities and the wonderful work they are doing to conserve our beautiful UK landscapes for years to come.
Every penny you give goes to charity. In our stores in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 90% of your donation will go to the National Trust (registered charity no. 205846) and 10% to Pennies (registered charity no. 1122489). In our stores in Scotland, 90% of your donation will go to The National Trust for Scotland (registered charity no. SC 007410) and 10% to Pennies (registered charity no. 1122489). All donations made with Pennies in our stores are non-refundable.
There’s wonder under the gold-flecked canopies of our woodlands. As well as providing a sanctuary for wildlife, trees clean our air and bring balance to our fragile landscape. Your donation will help grow the woodlands of tomorrow.
Trees are our natural armour in the battle against climate change, cleaning air and turning carbon dioxide into oxygen. But tree cover worldwide is falling at an alarming rate, causing woodland wildlife to lose their precious homes.
We want to do more to protect our woodlands and the animals that live there. That's why we’re asking you to support the National Trust, who have pledged to plant 20 million trees across the nation by 2030.
Did you know that the National Trust look after 12 million trees across all the places in their care? Just a single tree can remove 1 tonne of carbon from our air over 40 years.
So, how might your micro-donation be used? Here are some of the ways your donation could be spent:
- £5 worth of donations could plant and protect one sapling to help grow the woodlands of tomorrow
- £25 worth of donations could help restore footpaths and create trails in National Trust woodlands, so they can be enjoyed by everyone forever
- £500 worth of donations could plant and protect 100 trees, creating beautiful green spaces for people and wildlife to thrive
- £5,000 worth of donations could help look after 62.5 acres of woodland and the wildlife that live in them for a whole year

Footpaths play a vital part in allowing us to enjoy Scotland’s outdoor environment in a sustainable way. Your donation will help to protect Scotland’s iconic landscapes and natural habitats.
Without clear pathways, walkers find different routes and start to erode the surrounding area. This damage destroys the delicate upland ecosystems, leaving plants and vegetation vulnerable to the harsh Scottish weather and our habitats and wildlife exposed.
Over the spring and summer of 2020, the National Trust for Scotland’s footpath team should have been out repairing and maintaining the footpaths the Trust looks after. This essential behind-the-scenes work is critical in protecting Scotland’s iconic landscapes and habitats.
The pandemic halted their activity, leaving them months behind their schedule of crucial maintenance, at a time when the footpaths have been busier than ever. National Trust for Scotland need to get back out to repair, build and maintain Scotland’s network of footpaths to ensure the landscapes and habitats aren’t at risk of lasting or irreparable damage.
Every micro-donation adds up and every penny counts. Here are some of the ways your donation could be spent:
- £10 worth of donations could help buy spades, mattocks or other hand tools
- £25 worth of donations could help stabilise the edge of a collapsing path
- £48 worth of donations could help care for 1.2m of footpath, clear out vital ditching or restore a section of trampled ground
