In the past, waterproof fabrics were coated with heavy oils and waxes, requiring frequent reapplication. This led to the development of waterproof membranes. These fine films, bonded to the back of the exterior shell, feature tiny pores that block water infiltration while allowing sweat to evaporate. The challenge was to make these membranes durable without compromising on performance. This is where GORE-TEX® technology comes in.   

Expanded polyethylene (ePE) is a strong yet lightweight material that makes kit durable and waterproof without using perfluorinated chemicals. Traditionally, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) was used for these membranes due to its exceptional hydrophobic and durable qualities. However, ePTFE production involved PFCs and PFAS, which are known for their environmental and health risks. GORE-TEX® ePE is made without these chemicals, offering a responsible alternative without compromising performance.
