READ: RAB GEAR GUIDE
British hills are not high by alpine standards, but they turn wet, windy, and cold fast enough to catch people out, and that's exactly what Rab designs around. Pertex fabrics run through the jacket and sleeping bag ranges, providing wind resistance and water-shedding at low weight, while ethically sourced down in insulated jackets and sleeping bags delivers serious warmth without adding bulk. Rab waterproof jackets use Gore-Tex and Pertex Shield to keep rain and wind out on exposed ridgelines, and trousers add stretch panels and reinforced knees built for scrambling and steep trails.
Three ranges are worth knowing. The Rab Microlight Alpine is a lightweight down jacket that works as a mid-layer on high-output days or a standalone outer at camp. The Valiance steps up to mid-weight insulation for colder winter walking. The Cirrus uses synthetic insulation that keeps performing wet, for days when rain is more likely than not.
Rab is also a certified Carbon Neutral company, using recycled materials and PFAS-free DWR treatments across much of the range.
Shop Rab jackets, fleeces, sleeping bags, and trousers built by people who test their gear on the same hills you walk.
The Microlight uses synthetic fill, so it still keeps you warm if it gets wet. The Microlight Alpine uses down instead, giving better warmth for less weight, but only in dry conditions.
Use a specialist down wash and a front-loading machine on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low with clean tennis balls to restore loft afterward.
Pertex is a lightweight, tightly woven nylon Rab uses across jackets and sleeping bags. It resists wind and light rain while adding very little weight.
Check the comfort rating rather than the extreme rating. It reflects the lowest temperature an average sleeper stays warm at through the night.
The Valiance sits at the top of Rab's insulated range, built for serious cold with heavier down fill than everyday jackets like the Microlight.
