Meet Conscious Living Advocate: Elinor Faye

Meet Elinor, a passionate advocate for conscious living and the friendly face behind @ConsciouslyElle. Elinor's journey into the great outdoors was first sparked by her commitment to preserving nature and the impact it has on her mental well-being. We spoke to Elinor to learn more about her happy places and her approach to exploring, inspiring our new season collection.

How did your journey with the outdoors start?

Being located only an hour from the stunning Brecon Beacons and other diverse landscapes, the outdoors has always been easily accessible for me.

I visit the local beaches most days, which drew my attention to the litter issue in Swansea's tidal pools, prompting me to start litter picking. This marked the beginning of my sustainability journey and ultimately led me to pursue my master's in sustainability leadership.

My passion for protecting my local area and our planet quickly snowballed because I became aware of the role it played in my happiness. Whether watching the sunrise or taking a simple stroll in the park, I discovered that any time spent outside positively impacted my mood.

How does spending time outside impact your happiness?

Prioritising time outdoors has had a huge impact on my life. Even if it's only a brief 5-minute walk, any time outside is essential for my own well-being.

I’m more compassionate and kinder after spending time outside. It's become a non-negotiable aspect of my routine, contributing to my own personal growth and helping me connect to the world around me.

When I’m surrounded by nature, my body and mind respond differently. For example, when I complete a demanding hike, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment and reaching the summit fills me with immense happiness.

What’s your favourite way to spend time outside?

I like to go for hikes and walks most days of the week, occasionally incorporating a cold-water swim. Although, less so in the chilly autumn and winter months!

My favourite times of day to get outside are at dusk and dawn because it feels most tranquil. Pen Y Fan is one of my top destinations to watch the sunrise, mainly for its breathtaking 360-degree views when you reach the top. Living near the coast also provides me with numerous coastal paths to explore.

Which UK locations have had the biggest impact on you?

When I lived in South England, I loved to explore the Dorset area including the iconic spots Durdle Door and Chapmans.

Having recently moved back to Wales about six months ago, I've been enchanted by its landscapes. While biased being Welsh, I genuinely feel it's unmatched, with natural wonders only a stone's throw away. There aren't many countries where you can drive almost entirely around in a day — it's a unique experience.

Every visit to North Wales leaves me amazed; it's truly spectacular and unlike any other place in the UK. The landscapes transport you to a different world. It’s an incredible destination that everyone should visit if they ever have the chance.

How do you help other women explore outdoors more?

My online community is predominantly made up of women and I absolutely love it. Our shared experiences make it easier for us to connect and support one another. We often engage in conversations about our outdoor adventures, sharing stories and experiences.

I've noticed that many women have common questions and concerns when it comes to exploring the outdoors, especially those looking to venture out alone. Navigating the outdoors solo can be daunting, especially for newcomers, and some women face additional barriers that make exploration more challenging.

Ultimately, my goal is to empower more women to step into the outdoors through my community, instilling confidence and a sense of belonging in nature.

Do you have any tips for helping women build their confidence in the outdoors?

Owning quality outdoor kit definitely helps boost confidence when you're exploring. Durable, waterproof kit is crucial for unexpected weather and muddy trails. If you’re ever stuck wondering what you need to stay protected and comfortable, the Cotswold Outdoor kit specialists are great for answering any questions you may have in-store. They’re here to build your confidence, tailoring their kit recommendations to your style and adventures.

When exploring unfamiliar routes, it's a good idea to have an experienced person go along with you. For beginners, walk with friends and opt for a shorter route initially if you can. Online mentors can also offer valuable guidance as well as courses, especially for things like navigation skills.

Always remember that when it comes to exploring the outdoors, perfection isn't necessary. There's no need to scale steep peaks — strolling the local countryside is equally rewarding. Embrace the journey, and remember, everyone starts somewhere.

How important is getting advice when choosing your kit?

I found trying on the kit and speaking one-on-one with in-store specialists extremely useful. With an overwhelming amount of choice today, speaking to someone who knows the kit well made the process a lot easier.

The shift towards community-focused shopping is exciting. When it comes to purchasing essentials like walking boots or a rucksack, your interactions in-store create lasting connections. Recognising a familiar face upon returning builds confidence and adds a personal touch to your outdoor adventure journey.

How do you extend the life of your kit?

My upbringing instilled a mindset of resourcefulness at a young age. My parents, never quick to discard, repair and repurpose items, set a good example for me. Their approach, taping, stitching, and repairing clothes, has influenced me to prioritise longevity and reduce my environmental impact. This mindset of not just discarding but finding creative solutions has helped me keep my kit performing its best for longer.

What’s most important to you when it comes to choosing kit?

For me, comfort is so important. Especially when it comes to your outdoor essentials. A well-fitting backpack that offers plenty of space and storage or waterproofs that effectively shield you from the elements are crucial for a good experience outside. I’ve also learned the importance of layering correctly and having enough space to carry spare kit for those unexpected times when the weather takes a turn.

I think feeling good in what you wear translates into confidence while exploring. Although comfort is my priority, feeling stylish is a bonus.

What items will you always find in your pack on an adventure?

I’ll always pack a picnic blanket and a flask of coffee. I’ll also bring my camera because I love taking pictures when I’m outside exploring — it's one of my favourite things to do.

On my walks, I’ll find a good spot to watch the sunrise or set. Sometimes I’ll take a book to read if the weather is nice. I also enjoy watching the waves crash onto the shore, which I love most in the winter months. It just feels a bit more mystical. It's amazing.
