Fleece jackets provide lightweight warmth without bulk, ideal for layering. Their moisture-wicking properties keep you dry during activity, while breathable fabric prevents overheating. Brands like The North Face and Patagonia use air-trapping weaves for insulation, making fleece versatile for hiking, camping, or casual wear.
Turn the jacket inside-out, use cold water (30°C max), and a mild detergent (no fabric softener). Opt for a gentle cycle or handwash. Air-dry flat or hang—avoid tumble drying. For stains, pre-treat with a powdered soap solution.
Fleece weight is measured in grams per square meter (g/m²) and indicates the fabric's level of insulation.
- 100-weight is a light, highly breathable fleece, ideal as a mid-layer for high-intensity activities or as a standalone layer in mild conditions.
- 200-weight is a versatile, mid-weight fleece that offers a good balance of warmth and breathability for a wide range of temperatures and activities.
- 300-weight is a heavy, exceptionally warm fleece designed for very cold conditions and low-intensity activities where maximum insulation is required.
Polartec® is a specific brand of high-quality fleece known for its durability, insulation, and pill-resistance. It is made from premium polyester yarns knitted and then put through surface-finishing techniques to create a soft, lofty material that traps body heat effectively. Many Polartec® fabrics are now made from recycled materials, such as PET plastic bottles.
A technical fleece is designed for optimal performance during outdoor activities and often features moisture-wicking properties, stretch fabrics for improved movement, and strategic panelling. They are highly breathable, regulating body temperature during exertion. Standard fleeces prioritise comfort and warmth for casual, everyday use.
The zip style significantly impacts a fleece's versatility, ventilation, and weight :
- Full-Zip offers maximum ventilation and is the easiest to take on and off, making it ideal as a versatile outer layer or for activities with varying intensity levels. However, the full-length zip adds weight and can be a point of heat loss.
- Half-Zip/Quarter-Zip. These pullover styles are lighter and more packable due to the shorter zip. They provide good ventilation options while minimising weight and bulk, making them excellent for streamlined layering systems in activities like climbing or running.
