When it comes to performance fabrics, Merino wool stands apart. Sourced from Merino sheep, this natural fibre delivers a balance of comfort, durability, and technical performance that synthetic materials struggle to match.

Merino’s key strength is temperature regulation. Its fine, crimped fibres trap air to insulate in cold conditions, while also wicking moisture away from the skin when you heat up. This keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s not, making a Merino base layer the ideal foundation for any layering system.

Despite its warmth, Merino remains breathable and dry to the touch. The fibres can absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture without feeling damp, allowing the fabric to perform consistently during high-output activities.

Unlike traditional wool, Merino is soft and itch-free. Its ultrafine fibres, less than 22 microns in diameter, feel smooth against the skin, making it comfortable for all-day wear in base layers, thermals, merino wool socks, and jumpers.

Merino is also naturally odour-resistant. Its antimicrobial properties prevent the build-up of odour-causing bacteria, so garments stay fresh for longer. This makes it ideal for multi-day trips, where fewer items can do more.

Durability and ease of care add to its appeal. Merino fibres are naturally elastic, helping garments retain their shape over time, and modern constructions often reinforce high-wear areas. From performance clothing to products made with merino wool yarn, it offers long-lasting reliability. Most items can be machine washed on a cold cycle and tumble dried on low.

Finally, Merino is a sustainable choice. It is biodegradable and, when responsibly sourced, supports ethical farming practices, offering high performance with a lower environmental impact.

Merino fibres are exceptionally fine (1/5 human hair thickness), creating a smooth texture. The natural crimp prevents prickly ends from touching skin, making it ideal for sensitive wearers.

Its fibres trap insulating air in cold weather while wicking moisture in heat. The crimped structure expands when humid to release heat, then contracts to retain warmth as temperatures drop.

Yes – use cold water (≤30°C) on gentle cycles with wool-specific detergent. Avoid fabric softeners and tumble drying unless specified. Always check care labels for tailored instructions.

Lanolin (natural wax) and fibre structure inhibit odour-causing bacteria. Merino absorbs moisture without feeling damp, reducing bacterial growth common in synthetics.

Absolutely. Its moisture-wicking and breathability prevent overheating, while UV protection (UPF 50+) safeguards against sun exposure.
