About Icebreaker

Founded in 1995 in New Zealand, icebreaker pioneered the ethical and sustainable production of natural performance apparel. Icebreaker continues to challenge the status quo while championing natural, transparent, and responsible ways to do business.

As of today, 95% of icebreaker’s total fibre composition is merino wool or plant-based. This year the company will continue to research and develop bio-based alternatives for elastane, nylon and polyester. Icebreaker looks to nature for the answers and for innovative ways to do more with less. Working with what nature provides and adapting as nature does, icebreaker enables consumers to join a movement towards choosing natural and preserving our planet for generations to come.

Icebreaker primarily uses 100% natural merino wool, sourced from New Zealand Merino sheep, known for its softness, breathability, insulation, and odour resistance.

Merino wool regulates body temperature by keeping you warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot, provides moisture-wicking properties, and naturally resists odours for longer wear.

Yes, Icebreaker prioritises sustainability by sourcing natural fibres responsibly, using biodegradable materials, and developing bio-based alternatives for synthetic components in their fabric blends.

They provide a modular layering system including base layers (next-to-skin), mid layers (insulation), and outer layers (weather protection) crafted for activity-specific needs and different temperature ranges.

Merino wool absorbs moisture vapour and releases it into the air allowing skin to stay dry; its antibacterial properties prevent odour-causing agents, keeping garments fresh longer.

Yes, most Icebreaker garments are machine washable and designed for durability, though they recommend gentle washing to maintain fabric performance and longevity.

Icebreaker categorises layers by weight in grams (125, 200, 260, 320), helping customers choose the right warmth level for their activity and environment.

Some products blend natural merino with nylon, Lycra, or Tencel for added durability and stretch, although the brand continually researches sustainable replacements to reduce synthetics.

Yes, with lightweight merino for summer and heavier insulated layers for winter, Icebreaker’s range supports comfort year-round.
