Running shorts offer ultralight designs (<150g), moisture-wicking liners, and 4-way stretch for scrambling. Their breathability outperforms traditional shorts in heat, though they lack abrasion protection. 

Pair with knee-high merino socks for tick/scratch defense and apply SPF 50+ to exposed skin. For water crossings, choose quick-dry fabrics (under 2-hour dry time) with DWR treatments. 

Zippered cargo pockets (like Patagonia Everyday Shorts) secure essentials but add weight. For ultralight hikes, prioritise minimalist designs with hidden waistband pouches instead. 

Avoid denim – it retains moisture and lacks stretch. Opt for stretch-woven hybrids if seeking a denim look, as they offer quick-drying performance and UPF protection. 

Convertible designs with minimalist logos, stretch-woven fabrics, and subtle patterns transition seamlessly. Hidden security pockets add urban functionality.
