The Origins and History of Ayacucho

Ayacucho’s story officially began in 2009, but its roots stretch back to the breathtaking heights of the Peruvian Andes. The brand takes its name from Ayacucho, a region in Peru celebrated for its rich history, vibrant traditions, and the incredible resilience of its people. (If you’re wondering, it’s pronounced “Asher-Coo-Chew”— a little tribute to the local culture and the adventurous spirit that runs through both the place and the brand.)

What makes Ayacucho truly special is how it came to life. It was born from a unique partnership between Solid International — a not-for-profit organisation devoted to sustainable development, and A.S. Adventure, our parent company. This collaboration wasn’t just about making great outdoor gear; it was fueled by a genuine desire to make a real, positive impact in one of Peru’s poorest regions. The result? A brand that equips explorers around the world, while helping to build brighter futures in the heart of the Andes.

Early Days

  • The first Ayacucho products were humble rucksacks and packs, inspired by the needs of local communities and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
  • Local artisans, including “knitting mums” in Ayacucho, Peru, were engaged to handcraft hats and accessories, infusing every item with a story and a purpose.
  • The brand rapidly expanded, with its gear now trusted by mountaineers, hikers, and campers across Europe, including athletes like Kenton Cool, who wore Ayacucho gear on Everest.

Location and Cultural Roots

Ayacucho, Peru, isn’t just a place on the map-it’s a living tapestry of history and culture. Often called “Where Peru is born,” this remarkable region has played a starring role in the country’s story, from the days of ancient civilisations like the Wari Empire to the very moment Peru claimed its independence.

It’s no wonder Ayacucho the brand finds so much inspiration here. The area is famous for its vibrant artistic heritage—think beautifully crafted altarpieces and colourful textiles that tell stories of resilience and creativity. These traditions are woven into the very fabric of Ayacucho’s products, shaping everything from their design details to their bold, distinctive style. When you wear Ayacucho, you’re not just wearing outdoor gear-you’re carrying a piece of Peruvian heritage with you on every adventure.

Ayacucho’s Core Values

1. Designed for Generations

Ayacucho’s motto says it all: their gear is made to last. With timeless design and tough materials, every piece is built to be used, loved, and even passed down-so your adventures can inspire the next generation.

2. Responsibility and Social Impact

Every Ayacucho purchase helps make a difference. Part of the proceeds supports Solid International, funding projects that empower families and communities in Peru, Kenya, India, and Nepal.

Give a man a fish and you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you’ll feed him for a lifetime.” – Solid International’s guiding philosophy

3. Sustainability

Ayacucho keeps the planet in mind, using recycled materials and eco-friendly processes. Their gear is as gentle on the environment as it is tough in the outdoors.

4. Technical Excellence

Expect top performance, whatever the weather. Ayacucho’s innovative designs and advanced materials mean you stay comfortable and protected on every adventure-without sacrificing style.

Solid International – The Heartbeat Behind Ayacucho’s Impact

At the heart of Ayacucho’s story is a partnership that truly sets the brand apart. Ayacucho and Solid International aren’t just business partners-they’re allies on a mission. Together, they’re proving that outdoor gear can do so much more than keep you warm and dry; it can help change lives.

This collaboration isn’t your average business deal. It’s a heartfelt alliance built on a shared vision: to bring real, lasting change to some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities, starting in the Ayacucho region of Peru. Every time you choose Ayacucho, you’re not just investing in top-quality kit for your next adventure-you’re helping to fund projects that empower families, support local artisans, and create brighter futures. It’s outdoor gear with a purpose, and it’s making a difference-  adventure, and one community, at a time.

A Shared Vision for Sustainable Change

Since day one, Ayacucho has put its money where its heart is. Since 2009, 1% of revenue from every single Ayacucho product sold go straight to Solid International—a  Belgian not-for-profit with a big vision for a better world. Solid International, founded in 2000, is about empowering communities that need it most, blending smart business ideas with hands-on social projects that help people build brighter, more independent futures.

What makes this partnership extra special? Every penny Ayacucho donates goes directly to Solid International’s projects—no admin fees, no middlemen, just real help where needed most. That means when you pick up a new jacket or sleeping bag, you’re not just treating yourself; you’re making a genuine difference in someone’s life.

Solid International’s mission is simple but powerful: improve living conditions for people in disadvantaged areas by helping them stand on their own two feet. Their approach is twofold: Commercial Enterprises & Social Organisations.

Funding Projects That Transform Lives

The profits from Ayacucho sales fund a wide range of projects in the Ayacucho region of Peru, one of the poorest areas in the country, nestled in the Andes Mountains. Solid International’s work here is divided mainly into two divisions: Solid Diamanta and Solid Rural, each focusing on different aspects of community development.

Solid Rural is particularly significant, supporting local agriculture and entrepreneurship through several initiatives:

Circels solid
  • Solid Rural SAC → This project helps local farmers cultivate and commercialise organic indigenous crops such as quinoa. It provides facilities, training, and market access to improve farmers’ incomes sustainably.
  • Avelac SAC → This initiative supports dairy farmers by producing cheeses uncommon to the region-avoiding competition with traditional local products and opening new markets.
  • Solid OPD → The social arm of Solid Rural focuses on education and welfare. It runs programs like Familias Saludables, which helps vulnerable families improve their living conditions, and Jovem, which collaborates with local colleges to teach young people agricultural entrepreneurship.

"To date, over 1,268 families have benefited from these initiatives."

Beyond agriculture and entrepreneurship, Solid Diamanta is more focused on social development in Ayacucho, helping the women and children of the region to gain more independence, stability and freedom. Like Solid Rural, Diamanta is made up of three projects.

  • Dia - Support for Teenage Mothers → Solid runs social enterprises that provide shelter, counselling, and vocational training for young mothers, helping them build independent lives.
  • Manta - Knitting Workshops → Known affectionately as the “knitting mums,” local women handcraft hats and accessories for the Ayacucho brand. This not only preserves traditional crafts but also provides a steady income and empowerment for these women and their families.
  • Wiñay - Health and Living Conditions → Through Familias Saludables, Solid International works with families to improve hygiene, nutrition, and housing conditions, contributing to better overall health and well-being.
